South Carolina Outdoor Reception mid-60s temp?

Andrea, on September 21, 2020 at 12:19 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

Hi all!

We are having our ceremony & reception outside in Hilton Head on October 3rd. The weather during the day is suppose to be about 76 so it's perfect for the ceremony. For the reception, at night it's going to end up being around 65 degrees. We are under a large tent and of course will be dancing & drinking but do you think I will need a heater or 2? Everyone I've asked has said no but I still keep questioning myself!

I suggest having at least 2. I got married in October 5th last year in NC and it ended up being much colder than usual for that time of year (low 60s). I regretted not having heaters, especially for the older guests that might get cold easily.

That sounds like PERFECT weather to me! As long as your guests are aware that the reception is outside, I would just leave it up to them to bring a sweater, etc if they think they’ll need it. However, there’s no guarantee that is what the weather will actually do this far out- I know last week they were calling for temperatures in the mid 60s all this week here, and now they have changed it to mid 70s (A whole 10° difference!). Not sure how much advanced notice you would need to give the company to rent heaters- if you don’t need advanced notice, you could always wait until a day or two before the wedding to see how the weather looks before making your decision.

Hi! We were 10/10 with an outdoor reception about 45 minutes away from Hilton Head. Postponed to April, but we did not have plans to rent a heater. I think you'll be fine!! Congrats!

Depends on you and your guests. To me that’s not that cold but I live in Wisconsin and from Massachusetts. I went to an outdoor wedding in Vermont and it was 75 during the day and dropped to 50s at night and the tent stayed open and wasn’t heated. It was chilly but we were all fine dancing and drinking. A lot of the older crowd left around 8/9 but I think that’s pretty normal

Daughter's wedding was in So Cal in January. It was 78 degrees for the afternoon outdoor ceremony followed by the cocktail hour. The reception was in a roofed, but partially open-sided pavilion from 5-10 pm. I just checked the photos and the overhead heaters were on during the evening reception. I'm certain the outdoor temp wasn't lower than mid-60s. Even with dancing and drinking, I don't remember it being uncomfortably warm or cold with the heaters going. I'd probably go ahead and book a couple of heaters; you can always turn them down or not use them, but if people are cold they'll be uncomfortable and leave early. If you're questioning yourself, just do it so you can cross that worry off your list. Good luck!

YES I would get a heater. Worst case scenario, no one is cold. I had a visitor outside last weekend and it was only around 70° but it was breezy and as the sun went down I was COLD. I had on 2 sweatshirts, a blanket and a hand warmer! Haha. Bear in mind that when people dress for a wedding, they’re usually dressing to look nice not to keep warm! Hopefully they’ll bring a sweater but many choose fashion over function and won’t bring something warm enough for outdoors, presuming that precautions will be made to keep them warm.

Hi! I'm so sorry you had to postpone! Our original venue was about 30 minutes way from Hilton Head in Bluffton area, Oldfield River Club! We had to change our venue 4 weeks ago because Oldfield failed to contact me on the changes they made because they lost my contract, info, credit card number etc. so we changed it to Honey Horn. I would've loved to reschedule and keep the venue but unfortunately since they failed to notify us most of our vendors weren't able to work with us and it was too short notice Smiley sad. So, I feel your pain being a covid bride! Where is your venue? It'll be beautiful!

Thank you everyone for the input! Obviously the weather can change but just to be ahead of the game I think I'm going to get 1-2 and put 1 inside the tent in the back far away from the dance floor and another right outside the tent by the cocktail tables! It's better be safe than sorry.

Yes, I think this is a "know your crowd" sort of deal. Also from Wisconsin - I would say a heater isn't necessary unless it's under 55, but 65 to you might feel like 55 to me.
