Sound system for outdoor ceremony?

E&J, on July 22, 2015 at 12:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I'm wondering how other brides have handled this. We're having an outdoor ceremony in a garden with about 80 guests, and I've started to wonder if people will have trouble hearing. A picture of the ceremony spot is below--we stand under the structure. We'll also have a string quartet off to the side. For other brides that have had outdoor ceremonies, did you use a mic/speaker setup or go without? If you went without, how did it work out? I'm considering either buying an inexpensive outdoor speaker setup or contacting my DJ to see if it's feasible for them to do a second setup for the ceremony since the reception is at a different location. But I'd rather not spend the money unless it's really necessary.

I would contact your DJ. Doesn't hurt to find out. My DJ included the ceremony music/sound system in his package... but others I talked to, charged 100-200 dollars extra for the ceremony.

I do think it will be difficult to hear you. I went to an outdoor wedding without one, and I was in the back and couldn't hear a word. Sat and smiled for 20 minutes, completely out of the loop with what was happening up front.

I actually just opted to do this. My DJ is adding it for about 120 bucks, which I didn't think was too bad. I decided to do it based on the fact that 1. It's usually windy in the Keys and can get loud, and 2. My FH isn't a loud talker anyway. I'm usually pretty loud Smiley smile, but that doesn't mean that people in the back row will hear me. So, I got it for peace of mind. I went to an outdoor wedding with a similar type set up that you have and I personally couldn't hear anything. I was all the way in the back row. Not sure how many people there were at that wedding.

    Edited: grammar. sheesh!

Hmm, ok. That price isn't too bad, so maybe I will ask my DJ. Thanks!

Matt, I have 4 younger brothers and can project quite well. But, at one outdoor wedding, a grumpy old man seated about half-way back hollered, "I can't hear you." I thought to myself, if you have trouble hearing why aren't you sitting closer to the front? Everyone else can hear me. Of course, I didn't say that out loud. The groom said, "Ignore him, he refuses to wear his hearing aide and the family is fed up with him."

Absolutely, you'll need a mic. Either your officiant will have a wireless label mic or your DJ can set up sound equipment. Talk to both and figure out what will work best. Our DJ is doing sound for our ceremony for $100.

Thanks all! I just emailed my DJ, so I'll see what they say. I'm mostly concerned about the logistics of setting up two locations 4 miles apart, but hopefully they can work something out.

Our officiant is wearing a lapel mic and will have a mic on a stand for both us and the reader

I actually bought a Britelite M**** watt portable speaker for this scenario. I wanted it to be loud but with high sound quality. We so far used this speaker for our engagement party and it was awesome, loud, and the sound was great. I got it at BJs Wholesale for $250.

Always have a PA system set up for outdoor venues: I own a large wedding ceremony company: I highly recommend it. If your DJ does not offer this service, check with the ceremony officiant: we do these rentals for under $100 should you already have service with us. If it's a large ceremony where our clients need a sound operator will charge around $169: But do get a sound system of some kind "wireless".

I'm having a wedding in a medieval barn and I don't know what sound system I need. I don't need mics! I just need to project the music, so that everyone can hear it, from my mobile phone. Can anyone help?
