Something BORROWED

Erika, on May 30, 2016 at 5:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I know it's a tradition to wear something borrowed but how do I come bout with it, is it someone's job to give me something? Like a bridesmaid, maid of honor, my mother??? Or do I ask them.

If you have something in mind you can ask the person specifically... i want to borrow my grandpa's wedding ring since he passed 8 years ago so I haveto ask grandma... if you have a special person you are close to you can ask them if they have anything... my aunt offered me earrings but they don't fit well with my dress. Sometimes you ask, sometimes you get offered and if it works great.

The one thing I was told is your something borrowed should be from someone happily married as a sign of luck for a happy marriage

I'm borrowing my grandmother's bible from my sister. I had to ask for it.

Someone may offer if it's a tradition in your family (great grandmas veil or something). But it doesn't hurt to ask. My grandparents have all passed. So I will wear the ring my grandmother gave me before she died, it was a gift from my grandpa as a 25th anniversary present. That will be my something old. I'm going to have something from my other grandmother for my something borrowed. I asked my mother and aunts if there was anything of my grandmother's that I could wear or put on my bouquet. No luck yet, but haven't given up hope.

You have to ask. But ideally it's supposed to be something important to someone important who had a long happy marriage.

I am not religious. But I am having my grandma's rosary sewn into my dress in a pouch (so I won't loose it) she and my grandpa were happily married for a long time and tried to re-populate ireland. Long after she passed my grandpa still referred to her as his love. Also my grandmother spent more time clutching those beads and praying over the grandkids than one could imagine. It's nice to think about how much she loved us and worried about all of us so there is a lot of sentiment there.

My mother loaned me a penny for my shoe to cover my "something borrowed" and "sixpence". (Shout out to CELIA for the recommendation!!!) I would ask someone close to you or in your bridal party for something similar.

The original meaning of the borrowed part was to "borrow" somebody's luck in their marriage. I borrowed handkerchiefs from my parents Smiley smile

By the way, I have a sixpence I don't mind sharing if there's anybody in Canada that wants it!

Usually brides have something they have in mind they want to borrow, and you ask to borrow it.

My old, borrowed, and blue was a hanky that one of my g'mas gave to the other.

My new was my peach-colored shoes.
