Something borrowed....

Carolyn, on January 9, 2011 at 11:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

Just curious what you ladies did/are doing for the something borrowed/new/old/blue tradition? Looking for some interesting ideas!

His mothers pearls are borrowed. My undies are blue. The pearls are old and the undies are new. His mother gave me a lucky sixpence for my shoe. That is also very old and the last line of the poem.

Well, I don't know about something borrowed yet, but my something blue will be my dress (or part of it), my something old will be my grandmother's ring, I also don't know about the something new. I'm sure my kids will each attempt to stick pennies in my shoes (if I wear them).

    @ Carolyn

Im wearing my something blue on my feet a pic is attached below. As for everything else I'm still not to sure.

Dont know if this a dumb question but here it goes would my gown be considered my something new? or would the something new have to be something else?

Is it bad look to purchase your own sixpence or is it something that should be passed down? Im not sure if I should start a discussion about this cause Im extremely confused.

    Thanks in advance ladies

@Carolyn I love Dr. Seuss. Actually FMIL gave me a box a year ago to use for the Wedding. She wrote a cute poem that I sorta quoted. I was told I will have to give the pearls back so she can give them to her grand daughter someday. But for now I have semi permanent custody of them.

My daughters "Old, Borrowed and Blue" was her Grandfathers ring, worked in to her bouquet. He died when she was 7. They adored each other. So, he walked down the aisle with her.

    He new, her earrings.

@Dianna I do not know if the sixpence should be handed down but since they are no longer used it would take some doing to find one. She used it and if I have a daughter I will save it for her to use. If not i might give it to my daughter in law someday.

I have yet to find my old and borrowed. I have something new (dress), something blue (a sky blue topaz ring my FH gave me for xmas before he proposed). I have been hunting for old in antique stores. I've joked with my MOH that I might have to borrow $5 on my wedding day if I can't find anything else. I quit smoking so... no bumming a smoke. ; )

I have nothing and I'm sure if I will have any. I've never understood this tradition, what's it for?

Something old represents the continuing of your heritage

Something new to recognize the future you will be going into

Borrowing something is borrowing happiness from a happily married woman

Something Blue is a symbol of love, modesty, fidelity, good luck, purity and loyalty.

A sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security.

Something old will be my great grandmothers rosary beads.. it will be incorporated into my bouquet.. this will also be my something borrowed as it now belongs to my mom. Something new will be the perfume my sister bought for us.. She bought us Pleasures for men and women so we won't clash ... and blue will be my garter..

My something old, borrowed, and blue was the same thing. I wore my moms saphire ring that my dad gave to her when he asked her to go steady.

At Dianna : If you want a sixpence try ebay... there is a buy it now listing for less than $2 .... if this was a tradition in my family I'd buy one if no one was able to hand one down...

Something old - I borrowed an old locket from my mum and put photos in it of my two deceased grandparents, so that was old and borrow

Something new - lots! dress, shoes etc

"Borrowing something is borrowing happiness from a happily married woman" - oh dear, I borrowed the locket my dad bought my mum and they're now divorced!

Something Blue is a symbol of love, modesty, fidelity, good luck, purity and loyalty - that was in my husband's tartan, and I had the tartan round the boquet handle, and as a shawl

A sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security - I didn't do this, totally forgot! I even had a sixpence from my grandma and forgot!

My Moms blue topaz solitare that my Grandpop gave her when she was 16 is my old, borrowed and blue. I have had to beg her for it and I have to return it to her after the ceremony, but I got it. My new will be my dress.
