Soldering Rings Together?

Meesh, on September 25, 2018 at 10:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

Our jeweler said once we get married, they'd solder my engagement ring and band together for free. Is this something anyone else has thought about, heard of, or done? I mean I like the idea of one ring so you don't have to worry about losing one, I just don't know how it would look?

Personally, I would like to keep the option of wearing the wedding ring only at times (if I'm doing activity where I want less jewelry or where the engagement ring stone could snag). Plenty of people do get them soldered for the reasons you stated, so I think it really comes down to your personal preference.

I think they look great, I just don’t want to do it. I think i’m having reservations because both my e-ring and my wedding band have diamonds on three sides (rip of band and then both sides — the only side without a row of diamonds is the side that touches my finger). So it feels like a waste to do it and completely cover up two rows of diamonds forever.
My FMIL has hers soldered and then eventually undid it. I hear about a lot of people regretting it. I think I would sometimes want to wear one band or the other.
But, like you said, it might be easier to just deal with one ring lol.

What I was told is that if your rings don’t fit together like an enhancer or tucked into each other, it’s actually bad for them to be soldered. So like the poster above has a curvy ring and a straight band, I’ve been told that’s bad to solder. Where as mine I plan to solder because if they get out of place it would actually cause wear since they are meant to be tucked together. I am getting mine soldered. My band is so delicate I’d never wear it alone and we bought silicone bands for that purpose. First picture is my ring, second is with my band. It will look exactly like that soldered. Soldering doesn’t affect look, just integrity of the metal in a good or bad way.

I'm having mine soldered together now. My band curves together with my engagement ring and I've worn them together a few times and it annoys me how the band doesn't stay put where it should. I work a lot with my hands as well, so having them soldered where I don't need to worry about having my finger pinched between the two rings is nice. Here is a pic of my engagement ring. My wedding band curves along the engagement band with diamonds along the ring.

My e-ring is a sleek, smooth band but my wedding ring is curved to fit around it. I think I may pass on the soldering. Thanks everyone for the input!!

I had mine soldered together. I have a solitaire with a wrap and I would never wear them apart. I also didn't want then sliding again each other and causing damage.

I'm having mine soldered together before the wedding. My jeweler recommended it because it reduces the wear and tear on the rings. I'm personally not going to ever wear mine separately (it wouldn't look right) so I'm fine getting them stuck together and I'm so OCD that I will constantly fidget with them to make sure they are lined up if I don't solder them lol.

My mom got hers soldered together so they wouldn't twist and bug her. I'll probably get mine soldered together for that reason. I doubt I'll ever wear the wedding band alone.

My jeweler had asked me if I wanted my rings soldered together but said because they were two different metals if I did they may turn yellowish, so I just decided and decided that I could just deal with the twisting or I could just wear them one at a time.

    Hi Meesh,

I actually considered doing this myself. I chose 2 bands to go on either side of my engagement ring.

I have a couple of family members that have double bands. So I asked for advice. The thing with soldering your rings together, it will devalue them. But it really all comes down to preference. I will be keeping my separate.

If your wedding ring is contoured to fit into or around the engagement ring, get it soldered. The natural twisting motion will cause the settings to be damaged.

I wouldn’t do it. Sure you have one ring to worry about but if you lose it, you loose both rings.

I'm not planning on doing it. I like the freedom of being able to wear just my wedding band if I need to. It's nice if I'm just running out to the store or in an area where I don't want to risk something happening to my engagement ring. Plus I know that when the time comes and we have a child, I'll be more likely to wear just my band since it will be easier to maneuver a baby with since the diamond on my engagement ring sits fairly high in the setting.

I had mine soldered before the wedding and love it. Like others have said, it depends on your band. I was told with my engagement ring that since it has diamonds on the sides, the bands would rub back & forth on those diamonds & possibly damage them over time. My bands were also made for the ring so I probably would never wear them without the e-ring & I like the fact that they don’t slide back & forth because that woo

I was all about having my rings separate. Then I noticed that my bands were rubbing together causing them to scratch from all the turning. Also my skin was getting pinched.

For me it became the best choice. It just looks like my rings are perfectly seated at all times.

I don't look at my rings are heirlooms, I'm not selling them, (not that you get back what you paid on a ring so worrying about de-valuing is pointless).

My mom had hers soldered years ago, you can't see a difference. She says it's more comfortable. I'm not planning to do it initially. I'll wear them separate and see how they feel.

I will not be doing this, I like the idea of them remaining separate for a few reasons.

1.) The diamond on my engagement ring is solitaire and sticks out rather high, I don't see myself wearing it often when we have a baby for fear of scratching the baby with the diamond. (I've scratched myself and FH tons with it on accident, lol).

2.) Potentially one day I'd like to give my engagement ring to my son (if I have one) to pass to his future wife. Or we may do this FH moms ring, idk yet. I just like the idea of passing down family heirlooms and keeping them separate.

3.) I love the look of my wedding ring on its own. I may want to wear it alone when I'm a mom, when I'm traveling, when I'm out doing things and I don't want the bigger diamond on my e-ring to get lost/damaged. I am actually going to have two bands, one on either side of my engagement ring. I think its simple and pretty.

Yes my jeweler offered the same however I wont be doing this. if you will wear your rings together often then you should consider it but I won't be. my e-ring was passed down in FHs family and we plan to also pass it down in ours. It is also delicate and I work a not delicate job. my band is a simple band with inset stones that is less valuable and easier to replicate than the e-ring. once married, I will be locking my e-ring up in a safe only to be worn for special occasions.
