Sola Flowers--- anyone used them??

Stephanie, on May 23, 2016 at 2:12 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

I'm seriously contemplating using Sola flowers because they're beautiful, cost effective, & something you can keep. Has anyone used them? Can you spray paint, or is dying the only solution? Any pictures of yours would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all! Smiley smile

I decided to use them after seeing this: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/dream-bouquet-complete-sola-flower-diy/8d955c94dd68ab19.html

And she dyed over 1000 flowers: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/over-1000-sola-flowers/f6021b282c28218d.html

I read somewhere that you can spray paint them, but I dyed them with acrylic paint diluted in water (I dipped them in it). It was a bit of a trial and error with the density of the color and the roses you have to re-curl after they get humid, but overall I'm really happy with how things turned out so far. Let me dig for the pictures I have.

    1) The dying process (the colors are in the small containers

    2) The Boutonnieres

    3) WIP Bouquet (I glued stems onto the flowers)

If you are gonna DIY them, make sure you dry them completely before storing them. I lost a batch because I put them in a plastic bag and now they have mold on them Smiley sad

My bouquets and some of the flowers for my centerpieces are sola, but I ordered them from CarolinaRosaDesigns on Etsy. I'm not much of a DIY kind of gal. ETA-my understanding is that they have to be dyed, not spray painted.

CBtoCL.. I'm needing that coral color which is so hard to find! Did you find them stemmed already? Or is that an add on? Also, how much would you say is approximate cost of each boot & bouquet?

Thank you all! Loved looking at the flowers you all posted.

YES! I am doing my entire wedding using Sola flowers. EVERYTHING. I received all of my flowers about a week and a half ago and my dining room looks like a wedding bomb went off!

I have the DIY bug. I will be leaving all of my flowers neutral so I am skipping the whole step of dying/coloring them. As far as spraying them goes, you can spray them but depending on the kind/shape of the flower, you will get a different result with spraying since the spray will not reach as deep or as evenly into a tighter/more intricate flower. It really depends on the look you are going for-- If you are looking for your flowers to have uniform color I would recommend the dipping method.

I will take some pictures to post-- right now its not super interesting since I'm just unpacking and stemming Smiley smile

I used sola flowers for the bouquets and boutonnieres at our wedding recently. It was a lot of fun making them. Like Lrm0839, I went for natural colors so could skip the dying part. Here's some pictures of my bouquet:

Stephanie, the coral is Coral Reef from Craftsmart at michaels: http://findnsave.sj-r.com/offer/Satin-Acrylic-Paint-by-Craft-Smart-2-oz-Coral-Reef/56578468/

The mint is Ocean Breeze. I also got two slightly darker corals and greens, but forgot their names. I mixed them to get a range for the bouquets.

I did not buy them stemmed, I glued the wire in myself. There are some stemmed ones on save on crafts, but I don't know how easy it is to dye them.

I spent a total of $250 on all the flowers and supplies. That includes the wires for the stems, the jute for wrapping, the fillers etc. The supplies for one boutonniere comes to $1.50 at most, it's those flowers: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/shellflowers6.html which are 0.50 cents each, then you have a bit of a wire, some jute, some filler and the color. I will have my bouquet and 5 BM bouquets and enough single flowers that will be scattered on the tables instead of centerpieces.
