So many questions about cocktail hour

Stayce, on June 10, 2019 at 10:07 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
1. My venue has an outdoor ceremony area and a indoor reception area. Would it be easier to have the cocktail hour outside since everyone is already outside for the ceremony and then transition to the indoor reception area?

2. We’re having a fajitas buffet and the caterer is offering complementary chips and salsas. Would that and drinks (alcoholic and non) be sufficient for guests during cocktail hour? I have 90 guests and cocktail hour is 6pm-7pm

3. Should I have activities and entertainment available so people don’t get bored (lawn games, music, etc.) or do people not care about that stuff during cocktail hour?

I think keeping the cocktail hour outside, sense everyone will already be out there, is good. Plus, you will have nice weather in October. Chips and salsa with beverages is completely acceptable for food. I like that it goes with the theme of your reception food too!
As far as lawn games, I’ve never seen that done and I’ve never been bored at a wedding cocktail hour. But I also don’t think it would hurt anything to have them. Just remember, it’s only 1 hour. So I wouldn’t worry too much about people getting bored. By the time they wait in mine for food and drinks, it will be almost time to move on.

I agree with pp. And I don't think you need the games. People will drink, eat and talk. You don't need any more food for cocktail hour but I would say spend the additional money on more apps or for another part of the wedding instead of games

Umm can I come! I don’t think you need games. Chips and salsa and a margarita!

Depending on where you are, have it outside. People will mingle so don't worry about trying to entertain them. Chips & salsa & drinks is a perfect cocktail snack! If you want to squeeze in another small appetizer, then go for it, but I think you'll be just fine.

No games necessary! I would have it outside! We are doing outside ceremony, cocktail hour on the deck/upper lawn area, then they go in for the reception!

    1. That's what we are doing. I think it's a nice mix.

    2. It depends on how big the spread is. If it's LOTS of salsas & chips (like 5-10 different kinds set up in different areas), then yes. I assume it won't be that much, so I'd add things like queso & guac and maybe another mexican appetizer.

    3. People won't get bored, I'd just have music playing in the background! At ours, our photo booth will be open and people can sign our guest book during that time too. We will have yard games, but they aren't required.
