S/O: Do I Block Hotel Rooms for a Vegas Wedding?

Alejandra, on July 3, 2013 at 5:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Ok so I saw the post earlier about hotel blocks and I'm wondering if this is something I should do? We are having a destination wedding in Las Vegas with most guests going from Los Angeles. FH's family lives in Vegas though so they will have space for his side of the family to stay in.

My family and our friends will need hotel rooms though. Seeing as how it's Las Vegas and there's about a million hotels there, how would I go about choosing hotels? I was thinking I can do the closest to our venue (about 7 miles from the strip) and then one on the strip. However, I'm not sure that anyone would want to stay off the strip and they already have so many options on the strip that they might just go with the one of their preference. Should I even bother doing hotel blocks?

Yes. If you do it you and your guests usually get discounts. We went to a wedding in Vegas last summer they blocked rooms at the flamingo which is where most of us stayed. Those that chose elsewhere were fine too but at least then you can ensure most your guests are in one place : )

If everyone stays on strip then to get to the venue fill up the limos, if you do it that way and everyone splits the cost it's way cheaper then the taxis. We traveled by limo everywhere we went but we always had like 12-15 people with us.

Yes Yes Yes! I cannot stress this enough if your date is correct. Is that Memorial Day weekend? Years ago my parents and I took a random road trip to Vegas during a holiday weekend and just assumed we could find a room in one of the many hotels down there once we arrived. Needless to say, the first night our hotel was the casino floor gambling. Fortunately we found a spot the nights afterwards.

I agree with everyone else Alejandra, block some rooms as that is a busy time here.

Thanks everyone! Good point about it being Memorial Day Weekend. I looked at some rates and it looks like Sunday is way cheaper than Saturday which works out fine bc the wedding is Sunday evening so guests don't really need a room for Saturday if they drive Sunday morning. Now, to search for the right hotel....

BTW Alejandra you should check into a big limo or shuttle to get your guests to the wedding. A wedding I went to a few years ago was at Mt. Charleston and that couple had rented a shuttle bus and took us up to the wedding and back home.

I would definitely do a room block. Many of the larger casino hotels require a minimum of 10 rooms. If you are looking for something smaller, South of the strip (past Mandalay Bay), we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn for a team event. The price was affordable, the hotel was clean (comfy beds), and they provided a meeting room for us to hangout. They had a breakfast that they provided for us as well. It's not as fun as staying at a casino hotel, but much smaller for groups.

As a travel agent, I would definitely recommend doing a room block!! The last thing you want is for people to be spread out over a few hotels because it's high season or there is a conference in town taking up available rooms.

I would maybe even secure 2 room blocks to give people an option. Especially if one is a budget conscious hotel and the other a little more pricey. Just ensure you list the restrictions on the save the date or invite (ie. lots of rooms on the strip require a deposit, not just a credit card guarantee).

If you have more than 10 rooms, then you should block hotel rooms. The advantages are many. You can get free rooms for yourself, lower room rates, and in some cases, free shuttle service to a nearby reception hall.
