Smoking in all inclusive resorts?

Beth, on July 31, 2014 at 10:44 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

Hello!

We are looking to go on our honeymoon at an all inclusive resort (probably one of the Sandals or Secrets resorts). However, I am allergic to cigarette smoke, and I'm worried that my vacation will be ruined by people smoking everywhere. I emailed people at both resorts- Secrets said that smoking is allowed in all open areas, and Sandals hasn't gotten back to me yet but I'm willing to bet that the answer is going to be the same.

What are your experiences with going to these resorts and encountering smokers? Are there a lot of people that smoke? I really want to go in the pools and swim up bars but I'm afraid that's going to be the worst. Smiley sad

(Side note: I have looked around for a non-smoking all inclusive resort. The only one I found was the Hyatt Zilara in Cancun, which is a lot more expensive and over our budget. Booo.)

Please let me know! Thanks. (:

I've never run into many while traveling outside of the country, as it seems that the amount of smokers is significantly decreasing. Most places you travel to are going to allow it in any outdoor area. And if your outdoors, your allergies should be ok, but if not its always easy to pick up and move a bit aways.

Well, we went to the Atlantis, and unfortunately, my sweet DH is a smoker. That being said, Atlantis allows smoking in the casino, as well as outdoors. Personally, I didn't see any other smokers outside when we were walking around (the ocean breeze helps a lot), and the area where you had the worst smell was the casino.

The room didn't have a smokey smell at all, so I think you're good there also because they will hit guests with fees if they smell any bit of smoke after a guest has left.

We didn't see smokers at any of the pools. We also had a private cabana for an entire day, and still saw no smokers.

I think Maletese has a great point. The amount of people smoking this day and age has decreased a lot. So I think you will be fine, but stay out of the casinos so smoking is allowed in there, and since free drinks are usually provided, those smokers most likely won't budge.

OUr resort (Excellence Punta Cana) allowed smoking outside but I honestly didn't notice it at all (not allergic, but hate the smell). My husband smoked a cuban cigar on our patio (just because he COULD) which was stinky but that's all I can remember. We didn't go in the casino so not sure about there.

I have found that the more its is a European destination the more smoking you will find. They smoke everywhere all the time (no offense to any europeans on here.) Generally casino's will allow smoking. Then smoking around you at the pool/beach is pretty standard, but not overly heavy.

I HATE the smell of cigarette smoke so I try to avoid it best I can. Stay away from the casinos (saves you money too. Smiley laugh ) and try and find more secluded spots on the beach and by the pool and you should be fine.

We went to St. Bart's for honeymoon which is French, and you know the French love to smoke. The resort had an open air restaurant and people would smoke at their tables. I never noticed anyone smoking at a swim up bar though or even out at the beach, if they did I didn't notice it.

Last summer we went to Couples Tower Isle in Jamaica, and smoking is allowed in certain outdoor areas (but not everywhere). Honestly, we never noticed it, and I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke. So, it is possible to avoid it even if the resort allows it.

I just went to an all inclusive in January in Punta Cana and I didn't notice much smoking. I am incredibly sensitive to cigarette smoke- it makes me sick- so I would have noticed right away if it was bad. It was the same way in the Bahamas on our honeymoon, although we weren't at an all inclusive then. Really the only places I remember smelling smoke was near the trashcans around the resort, where the ash trays were. I didn't notice much at all at any of the pools/beaches/swim up bars.

@The Mrs R, which resort did you go to? We're currently looking at the Excellence in Punta Cana.
