I did it. The original line of the poem is, "And a silver sixpence in her shoe." I was obsessive enough to learn that the British sixpence stopped being almost all silver, and became only half silver, in 1920, so I bought a sixpence (on eBay) that was older than 1920. LOL

I talked to my mom who lived in England after I bought one and she said it's their tradition for the sixpence but since I was born here, a penny will work. I believe it's the left shoe. Here is the website I went with. http://sixpencecoin.com/

In the early 17th century, a nobleman would give his bride a piece of silver (in the form of a sixpence) for a wedding gift. The coin was used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits on the wedding day (because the tricky bastards were very busy during rites of passage). Later on, the sixpence became part of a bride's dowry as it was passed down through the generations.

A friend of mine wanted to stick to the original tradition. She found her sixpence on this website. They have really old ones and ones they've made into keepsakes like anklets too. I think I might want to get one now!
