Singing during dinner?

Kaegurl, on May 27, 2014 at 5:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

Ok, we're having a "band" at our wedding reception. Band - as in a singer, a bass, and a piano (Jazz Trio according to the website). The girl can sing old favorites from Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and she can even sing contemporary songs from Adele, John Legend, etc.

My question is, would it be too much for her to sing some ambiance music during dinner. Something light and low key that still allows for ample conversation. The girl said they could: "We could provide light dinner music, some swing and light latin to create the dinner ambience, and then warm people up to dancing if you would like."

My mom thinks its weird to have someone singing during a meal and that she's never been to wedding with live music (she hasn't been to a wedding in over 15 years). She's afraid conversation wont happen. Is it weird? Our reception is formal, but small with 40ish guests. We have a private room, but our reception is only 3 hours long.

Thoughts or suggestions.

I think it would be fine to have a singer during dinner. I would just make sure the music is soft enough that people can talk!

I think it's fine if she sings some light background songs during dinner. I've been to several fine dining restaurants where there was a singer and didn't find it weird at all.

I've been to a couple weddings where the band sang during dinner, and there was no difficulty to talk-- they chose really appropriate songs and it was very nice.

My only thought would be for her to sing with no mic so it's soft and not overly loud. If it can be quiet and allow for talking I think it's totally fine.

It's not weird at all! We're actually having a 5-person band with a singer, so we will have them play music all throughout dinner and the rest of the reception. We're having a CD during cocktails though. Anyway, you should definitely have some music during dinner. Everyone will love it! Smiley smile
