Silicone rings

Kristen, on April 14, 2017 at 4:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

So I ran into an older family friend today while at breakfast. I was heading straight to work after breakfast (a hospital kitchen) so I was wearing my work clothes, etc. She asked to see my engagement ring since she hasn't yet and I showed her my silicone band that I wear at work and explained that my engagement ring gets banged around a lot in the kitchen. She looked at me like I had 5 heads. Like it was the stupidest idea she'd ever heard of. I wasn't really self conscious about it until now..... I guess I'm asking if this is childish or looks silly? Should I wear nothing instead?

I see lots of people who work in environments that could damage the ring wear those. I know I feel "naked" taking off my ring even just to shower, those rings are a great way to deal with that feeling and to represent the commitment. I see nothing wrong with it.

Screw her. It's perfectly fine to wear a silicone ring if you want to.

I think you're fine. I know a fair number of people who wear them in professions where they work with their hands or when camping or something.

It's perfectly fine! DH and I both wear silicone rings to work and when we go camping, etc. there's nothing wrong with it.

    It's incredibly practical!

Someone dear to me wore one throughout her pregnancy, when her ring didn't fit, and now both she and her husband wear them regularly.

I think the silicon rings is a newer thing. My mom and future MIL both thought it was stupid when we bought ours but we are both super active (camping, horses, farm life in general). Most of our friends actually have them too.

    I think it's smart!

We just bought silicone rings to wear on our honeymoon and in the future when we travel/ FH is working in the workshop.

I think they are a great alternative when your life/job would damage your ring

I'm a truck driver so I wear my silicone to work all the time, because I don't want to damage it. It's the responsible thing to do.

I agree the silicone are just fine. I wear one when I work out or if I go out somewhere public and will be drinking heavily (i.e. bar hopping for a bachelorette party).

It might be a generational thing?? Not positive, but I had a similar reaction from my friend's grandmother. In a group of women we were talking about when people remove their rings. I explained I remove mine when I workout (barbells everywhere), when I clean (harsh toxins), when I cook (food particles), when I shower (habit) and when I sleep (per my jeweler the metal wears down over time rubbing against the sheets). When I told her all of this she reacted very strongly stating I should never under any circumstances remove my ring, saying it was inappropriate/disrespectful to take my ring off. I know she wasn't trying to be mean, it was just her honest viewpoint/reaction.

My SIL works in the medical field and they are very popular there as well.

Not childish at all. It was rude of her to give a negative reaction. Keep doing your thing

I'm a nurse and I wore no ring for a while. Finally found a dainty silicone ring I liked! I wear it to work and to the gym.

I think they are stupid. Imho. I sort of get why people wear them but it's just one more thing to keep track of and shuffle around.

I don't think it warrants a "wtf" look. I just think it's pointless.

But it it makes you happy wear the fuck out of it. My opinion does not and should not matter.

I wear one to workout and my FH wears his all day. Her response clearly shows how out of touch she is with modern trends.

I wear silicone rings when working out. It's a newish trend, so maybe she's just never seen one before. I think it was rude of her to give you a look.

I think it's a great idea! My FH works at a heavy machinery plant making engines for semi-trucks and this is what he wears so his ring doesn't get ruined!

Go for it. I have one for each of us. Even now, if I'm doing something (fishing or painting, for example) that could lead to my e-ring getting messed up, I wear my black silicone ring. She may not have seen one before.

In my opinion you should wear what you want. Who cares what people think.
