Should we use Citronella Candles?

Holly Renee, on January 24, 2011 at 7:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

We are having our wedding on a farm from 4pm to 9pm on a Friday in June. The reception is in a barn that has been setup for weddings. It's a laid back wedding that is formal and nice at the same time. Our florist actually had her wedding at the same venue a couple of years ago. She said that we needed to make sure to have mosquito repellent, that was the one thing she wished she had brought.

Soooo I was thinking of putting some citronella candles in the centerpieces. There are four votive candles on each centerpiece... would it be a good idea to make those be citronella candles? OR would it maybe make the whole place smell too citronella-y? What about having two of the candles be citronella? Suggestions?

(Below are pictures of the centerpiece, the outside of the barn, and the inside of the barn.)

I don't think so...they have a very strong smell that bothers some people, especially indoors.

Maybe put some of those bug fans or some bug spray on the tables or in the bathroom; prettied up of course.

You really can't put anything scented on a table where you are going to it. But, I would do something. Can you use the citronella torches, weddinged out?

I think the smell of the candle's could mess with your taste buds. Can you just spray the yard, I don't know who makes it, but my dad used to spray the yard with some bug killer stuff before parties. Maybe set up a basket in the bathrooms with that nice bug spray that doesn't smell and is soft/power feel, not wet Off smooth and dry?

I don't think you will really need them that much inside the barn bc there is no grass and I agree with the idea of the smell turn off BUT I would recommend them maybe as torches right outside the doorway to deter them from coming into the barn and then have repellent for those people who are really sensitive.

We can totally do torches in front of the doorways AND on the outside tables (there are a few on the side that people can go to to get fresh air). I am also going to get some natural bug spray to put in the bathrooms and on a few of the tables.

Okay, this is good to know. Thanks.

We use an organic orange spray w/ a backpack sprayer on the grounds where guests will be, it significantly decreases problems. You can purchase the materials from chemical supplies to DIY or hire a firm like Orkin to do it about 8 hrs before guests will arrive. We also set out a basket of bug sprays and repellant towelettes, some people (like me) seem to attract biting bugs no matter what.

Also check and treat the grounds for ant hills.
