Should Married Couples Have Joint or Separate Bank Accounts?

The Bride, on July 15, 2019 at 8:08 PM

Traditionally, when a couple gets married they merge their money along with the remainder of their lives. However, many married couples have decided to maintain separate bank accounts. What are your thoughts? Should married couples have joint or separate bank accounts? Why?

We are keeping separate bank accounts for now. I really just don't see any reason to combine. We have a "joint" savings account but it is only in my name. FH can only put money in and not take out. This is because I'm better at saving and he actually likes it this way. We trust each other.

I definitely recommend having a separate account for yourself.

For my husband and I, a percentage of our paychecks go into our joint saving account. Other than that, we have our own accounts where we pay bills and buy things for ourselves and one another.

My husband and I don't have ATM cards for our joint savings account, that way if we want to take money out we have to go through the inconvenience of going into a branch. So far we haven't taken any money out, lol.

That's good! Ours is online savings account that we can make 6 withdrawals a month. I'm disciplined enough not to touch or need it. The only time I took money out was for the down payment on our house! Yay diligent saving haha.

Savings are awesome because it helps you to be discipline and you never know when you might need money for a rainy day.

We are having one joint bank account! We are coming together as one and so are our bank accounts.
