Should I hire a makeup artist for engagement photos?

Lauren R., on March 12, 2015 at 6:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

My wedding makeup artist isn't available, but I was referred to someone who wants $100. She is willing to come to me and will do touch ups if needed, but we are only doing an hour shoot and it seems like a lot. I'm nervous about trying a makeup counter. Any success/horror stories? Should I just suck it up?

You should look at local salons. A lot f salons do makeup as well and it is a lot cheaper than someone coming to you.

If you want to spend the money, sure. I didn't, though. And touch-ups for an hour shoot? That's taking away time with the photographer. Your make-up shouldn't have that many problems in an hour.

I did my first MUAH trial for my engagement photo shoot.

I'm all for hiring someone for makeup- I would ask if they could include a trial for the price- you want to make sure you like them. Also I would buy your lip color- what I've heard is that's what usually need the most touching up. If you have it, you can do it or ask your MOH for some help

Do you normally wear makeup? I wear a full face every day and had no problem doing my own makeup. If you want to get it done, I would go to a salon- you won't pay nearly as much!

EricaTx- You read my mind! As soon as she told me her price, I was thinking that if her makeup doesn't last an hour, she shouldn't be charging $100. lol

Becky - Great point about the lip color. I actually have one I love that I think I'll use. Unfortunately, my shoot is in two weeks, so no time for a trial.

Annakay- I do wear makeup, but don't know how to apply it well enough for it to show on camera.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will call around to some salons instead.

I'm getting my make-up and hair done for the engagements. I rarely get all dolled up and figured I would splurge on myself.

I got my make up and hair done for engagement and it was so much fun and so worth it. I actually went to a sephora that does free full makeup application if you spend $50 on product. I bought my lip color and an eyeshadow palette that I've been dying to try. The mua did a fabulous job and I only paid for my product and I tipped her. She even gave me samples of everything she used that I didn't buy so I would have it for touch ups or if I decided to buy it later of course. I got a blowout with loose curls done at a nearby salon and had made sure that my highlights got touched up about a week before.

I'm a Sephora addict, but I hear it's the luck of the draw on the artists. That's definitely an idea.

It's up to you. I spent $100 on hair and makeup for my engagement photos. It's up to you how much you are willing to spend for that occasion.

If you have the budget than yes! If spending money on a make up artist would hurt you having your dream wedding than no.
