My venue gives a cash payment discount. The owner told me that it is because they have extra fees that they have to pay when someone uses a credit card so they offer a small incentive to avoid the hassle and fees etc. I think as long as it seems like a legit business and nothing else is sketchy I wouldn't be concerned

No I wouldn't be weary. Though I personally would rather pay with a card for the protection...when vendors get paid with a credit card they get charged a fee. Usually they will give you a discount to use cash because they don't have to pay a fee.

^ What they said. Our caterer will give us a 3% discount if we pay with a money order or cash.

Most vendors will give a discount if you pay in cash. Just make sure you have a contract with those vendors. A lot of them do it to avoid the credit card fee, but some of them won't report it on there w40 when tax season rolls around, so they avoid paying taxes on it.

Just make sure that you receive a certified receipt immediately after purchase so you have a record of paying them.

I think it's pretty normal. I've had this happen with non-wedding stuff before. None of my wedding vendors have mentioned this, but the store where I bought my dress won't accept credit card payments unless you're paying the full cost of your purchase. Assuming it has something to do with the fees.

Having worked in a hotel and processed credit card payments as well as posting payments when the credit card companies I agree with what has already been said. In addition to fees, there is a delay in getting payment, 2 of the big 3 pay about once every 3 weeks and the other pays once a month. Thay is why even if I pay something with a credit card (such as a restaurant bill) I still pay the tip in cash.

I paid for almost my entire wedding for cash. ALL of my vendors offered me a better price because of it.

My florist offered a cash discount. Her taxes are her business. As long as I get a reciept I'm a happy camper. I say go for it.

Our venue requires cash for final payment (no personal checks allowed), so no - I wouldn't be too alarmed. I'm sure they get charged for using credit card machines, so it doesn't sound too weird. Just make sure you have a signed contract and get a printed receipt for all transactions.

Well I'm sure we're all weary of this wedding planning, but I don't think you should be wary either. Smiley winking

My planner actually only accepts cash or USPS money order for final payment. Not because of fees, because of shady clients who would try to dispute charges on final payments because they didn't want to pay their final balance. Happened to her twice when she first started out.

Nope! My videographer offered a discount if I paid a 50% deposit instead of 30% and same for 100% deposit. It wasn't cash, but still. I did get a discount!

The photographer/videographer I want to book offers to take off the taxes if we pay by personal check made to them and not the company instead of credit/debit card

Ashley's right - a year or two ago, some legislation was passed in an effort to protect credit card holders against excessive fees, but the result is that credit card companies made up the losses by shifting the fees to vendors - who have to pass them on to consumers... the only way they can get around it is to offer cash discounts, something that was common twenty years ago, actually, even at gas stations (which I'm seeing start up again!). Nothing sketchy at all.

I wouldn't be weary, just make sure they give you a receipt.

I'm one of those clients/customers who ask if I can pay in cash so I don't have to pay tax lol, I also give my clients the same option (I'm a party planner).

I saved $500 on my venue paying cash and another percentage (can't recall) for paying the total all up front. I like to see how good of a deal I can get everywhere, so I would even ask all of the vendors I talked to about any discounts available.

Like everyone said, just get a receipt.

My venue offered a discount for cash and a discount for paying in only two installments. They are passing their administrative savings on to you. As long as you have receipts and contracts, you should be fine.
