Short brides with altered fit and flare/trumpet dresses

Courtney, on November 24, 2020 at 6:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 10
Hi everyone,

I just got my dress back and I'm worried that after alterations the bottom half of the dress will look akward because im short. I'm probably over thinking it but I'd love to see some shorter brides with similar dress types after it was altered. Any help visually would be great! Thanks!

Can you describe in detail what your dress looks like? As far as the cut?

Heres the dress. The top is great and the waiste is to but I'm nervous if the bottom will look weird when shortened. I'm 5'1 so there's gonna have to be quite a bit taken off.

I am 4”8. What needs to be shortened is the whole torso, not just the bottom. That would make us shorter than we are, if you get what I mean. I have seen alterations done the easy way, but not using thought into it. I still kept my dress away from anyone to see it, until I have my wedding in 2022. This is my previous dress choice before I have found the one:

Imagine you cut only the bottom. I would look short. What needs to be done is to detach the dress at the waist, cut the corset shorter at the bottom, and cut the skirt from 3 parts (waist, trim, hem) 😉

Great advice from Belle! Talk with your seamstress about it & see what she says.

I’m 5’. Here’s pics of me trying on my unaltered dress when it first arrived at the shop and then a pic of it altered. Smiley smile

My fit and flare dress had lace all over and needed to be shortened. The seamstress took the lace appliques off, shortened the dress, and then put the lace back on so it didn't look off. I'm 5'4 and wore flats. If you are shorter, then you may need to do what Belle suggested above.

No problem! As others mentioned, your tailor is going to have to basically remove excess length from the torso. You can’t see it from my pics, but my dress’ train edge has lace appliqués and details. She also brought up the bodice’s lace to make it look proportional to my body and exactly the way it fits the 5’10” model on the designers’ website pictures. Lol

That's really great to know! I'm definitely going to let my tailor work their magic lol I'm was just so worried that even after tailoring it might lay weird and I was questioning my decision in style but clearly you rocked it just like a 5'10 model!
