Shoes or Dress First?

I was looking at shoes the other day (no dress yet - trying on this weekend) & she says, “don’t be the one who buys the shoes before the dress” lol. I tell her that I’m just looking for ideas & it has me thinking, does the dress really come before heels lol

I oils do dress first unless you plan on getting a very simple nude or metallic heel that will essentially match anything. There are many different shades of white, ivory, and champagne and many different styles of embellishments on dresses, and this may play a big role in finding the right shoes!

It depends I would say. I knew I wanted a long dress no matter what and plan to wear white sneakers so I knew I could get them before dress shopping. They also say not to buy jewelry beforehand and I did lol

I agree with the others! It depends on a lot of factors.

I generally agree that shoes are an accessory, and I also tend to build my outfits around a dress/clothing most of the time, but occasionally, I'll have a pair of shoes I haven't worn in a while and I'll try on all the options I have that might work, until I can find something I like specifically to wear with those shoes.

In the case of my wedding...I'd chosen my shoes for sentimental reasons (I was wearing a pair of that brand when I met my soon to be husband, so wanted another pair for our wedding), so I knew what shoes I wanted well before I chose a dress, and had no problem buying them before the dress for a few reasons

    - the ones I chose are incredibly plain and would have gone with just about any dress I may have chosen. If I'd wanted something more out there, then of course I'd have had to weigh up which item was more important to me.

    - the shoes are very classic, and so is my overall style, so I knew they would go together - the shoes are a true neutral, so would never have looked odd, irrespective of the dress I chose. I do think if you have a very eclectic style, then picking shoes first might limit your dress options and vice versa, but this wasn't the case for me.

    - the shoes are not white but nude, so I didn't have to attempt to match the colour tone of the dress to the shoes - I did have this problem with the flats I bought and I quickly discovered it was very hard to find a pair of satin flats that matched the right shade of ivory - white in one brand is ivory in another, and so on! To me, this makes one of the best arguments against buying shoes before the dress. If you are buying coloured shoes, this obviously isn't an issue though.

Honestly though, I think it's a case of what matters to you, and what you have a strong pull to. I knew I would make those shoes work with whatever dress, because I was determined to have them, even though they'd be hidden under a giant ballgown and not to be seen by anyone, haha!

I brought my favorite gold heels from Target (I wear them to every wedding, and wore them for our engagement photos) with me when I started wedding shopping, as I figured I’d either wear them on my wedding day or find something in a similar height down the road. I’m so glad I brought them with me, because when I did say yes to my Martina Liana dress I was able to order it to my size and with a special hem (measured wearing my heels), which saved quite a bit on alterations (as I now only need minor alterations on the side, and a bustle).

Also, I think that if a wedding, for example, is in nature, the hell are completely inconvenient. At best, you can get a corn

I already have my shoes because I wore them to prom in high school. It makes it easier dress shopping because you know how the dress will fit when wearing your shoes.
