Shoes or Dress First?

Andrea, on January 17, 2022 at 10:45 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 30
I was looking at shoes the other day (no dress yet - trying on this weekend) & she says, “don’t be the one who buys the shoes before the dress” lol. I tell her that I’m just looking for ideas & it has me thinking, does the dress really come before heels lol tenor.gif

I dont think it matters really as long as the style of the shoe youre getting isnt super specific to a single aesthetic. If you are going to buy shoes first I would just make sure they can translate in style to any dress style as well. I bought my shoes already and wont even think about dress shopping until this summer.

Definitely shoes first! You may end up choosing a completely different style or color of dress than you had ever anticipated (totally happened to me)!

There's no reason you can't purchase your shoes first - if you do, bring them with you to your appointment, so you can see "the whole look." I had my veil first, brought it with me, and when I found the dress, put my veil on just to make sure.

I think it depends on what you prioritize. For me I prioritize my dress over my shoes. So I wasn’t going to buy shoes and base my dress choice off of them. So I chose my dress and then I’ll choose my shoes based off of what matches it. As long as you have your shoes before the first fitting to see the look and know what length you need the dress to be.

Yes, I think that’s just how it goes sometimes and I think it’s okay, to have shoes first.

You can do whichever order, but I would personally prioritize dress. The dress is what people are going to pay far more attention to, especially if you are going with a full length gown where the shoes are barely visible. To me, shoes are an accessory, which is chosen to go with the main outfit, the dress.

For me ,personally, my dress came first. Then the shoes. Everyone will be paying attention to the dress and not necessarily the shoes. However I also care more about the comfort in the shoes than what they look like since I will be wearing them all day. It's totally all a preference

In fact, I think the dress should be chosen first. I know several girls who wore sneakers on their wedding day. Their shoes were completely invisible in their dresses. They danced and had fun without getting tired at allSmiley laugh

That’s actually awesome. I do want to have sandals at the reception for sure!!!!! And that is true if your dress is long, nobody would even know.

Suggestion - if you're going with two different heights for shoes, have your dress tailored to the shorter one. I'm wearing heels for my ceremony/first dance, but for the rest of the reception, I'll be switching to flats and I'm having the length of my dress tailored to my flats. That way you won't be holding your dress up the whole time you're dancing and if the toes of your higher shoes peek out, it's no big deal.

Also I've totally already picked out my shoes without having completed the design for my dress. My best friend is a designer (and designing mine) and when I told her I had already picked my shoes she didn't blink.

There's no right or wrong way to do any of this.

The only thing is depending on the material of the bottom of the dress, you may have to be conscientious of shoe decor — my dress was tulle at the bottom and my seamstress was concerned when she saw my sparkly shoes— I guess she was worried they would be sequins and my dress would catch on them and possible tear!

Do you know, actually never thought of that for some reason. That is something to consider.
