shellac nails vs gel nails

Sara, on August 16, 2013 at 2:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I have never had shellac nails before but everyone says its the new in thing now... I am not sure which one I should do for my wedding... my nails are different lengths, some are short and some are long.. so not sure if the shellac would look good, but I work at a hospital so I am not allowed to have gel or fake nails, so if I got them done for wedding even though I think they would look better I have to have them taken off before I return to work... what do you guys think?

I've never had gel, so I'm only speaking about shellac.

Make sure you use a salon with a good shellac brand. I really liked how it stayed on for a while, but I had two problems with it.

    1) The brand my salon girl used was very thin. She put two coats on, and by the end I was only about 80% happy. I would've preferred it more pigmented.

    2) Taking it off was a b****. You can either soak your hands in acetone (which I did and completely messed up my nails) or go back to the salon and have them take it off (and pay for it).

Despite my displeasure with those two things, I will be getting my nails shellacked. The longevity was worth it and since it's a kind of nail polish (sort of), my nails weren't fake looking - they were my real nails.

I think I got the gel for my sister's wedding, the person at the salon said that gel and shellac is basically the same thing and works similarly...just a different brand. I just got french tips with little flowers on each ring finger (I had just gotten engaged so I wanted something fancy for myself). The wedding was over two months ago and I still have some of the polish on but since it was clear it isn't very noticeable. Otherwise I'd have to go in and get it soaked off. But they were my real nails and it looked very beautiful!

I'm pretty sure gel and shellac are the same thing. It is what I usually get .. with french tips. It would work fine w your nails, just make sure that they are all the same lengths! When you go back to work, just soak your nails in acetone for a while and it will come off. I have never had a problem w the acetone messing up my nails. UNLESS, you are trying to remove fake nails, then yeah .. your real nails WILL get messed up. But if just removing the polish, you will be fine.

I have not tried gel only Shellac, I would say either one works great. shellac isn't better looking it just lasts longer where I think the gel may look better and shinier...not sure.

I've never had either before. I'm a violinist, I can't have fake nails, and any colored nails annoy me when I'm playing. But I will be getting the shellac nails for my wedding because it's included in my package. So we'll see how that goes...

I love gel - I got it end of June and it's still on!! Obviously, my nails have grown in, but it just proves how long it lasts!!!

I personally do not like Shellac/Gel nails. They always chip and it takes so much longer to take it off. I have gone to a number of places to have it done and I wouldn't say that I am rough with my hands, I am an accountant so I do work on a computer a lot but I do not think that would cause the polish to chip.

If it were up to me. I would save some money especially since you have to remove it before returning to work and go with regular polish. Because honestly you'll either have to pay someone to take the shellac off or it will take you a while to do it yourself. Who really wants to put cotton balls soaked in acetone with foil wrapped around their finger tips after their wedding/honeymoon??

I've had both. The gel I like but they look fake to me and sometimes can take a trashy route. Shellac I like because it doesn't chip so you can get them done days before your wedding and not have to worry about it. I would say try the color a while before your wedding because sometimes the color on the swatch they give is not the same as it comes out. As far as removing them, I put a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover and tin foil each finger tip. It takes like 10-15 mins and then you just scrape it away so it doesn't ruin your nails like soaking in acetone does.

Maybe it depends on the salon but shellac and gel is not the same. With gel they will add a tip for your nails to be longer and shellac they don't. To me gel nails have damanged my nails where as shellac wasn't as bad.

They are basically the same, and mine never have chipped. if they are chipping you should try a different nail place

Gel and Shellac are they same thing, there are just different brands on the market so they have different names. Just make sure you go to a salon that has good ratings because certain people don't apply it properly and it looks uneven.

Yeah I think I am gonna try the Shellac this weekend at a salon first to see how I like them because my bridesmaid sister works at a salon and is suppose to be doing my nails and my hair for my wedding but I have never seen any of her work so I am kind of nervous...

Never heard of shellac. I wear gel only. I get them done once a month.

Personally, I like shellac. I have never had gel but for a one time event, such as a wedding, shellac is a good idea. My only tip is that you find a good salon. I've had shellac several times & when it is done properly it lasts like 3 weeks! However, the last time I had it done, it chipped in a few days, which it's not supposed to. So just check around for places.
