Sewn in cups for bigger bust?

Nicole, on June 25, 2014 at 11:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 23

Because I am a DD, my seamstress keeps insisting that I need an actual bra for lift and shaping. But my dress has a very low back and I am having a very hard time finding one! I have tried like 6 different bras from various places and none works.

I am wondering if the sewn in cups might be an option. My dress is fitted but it lacks boning or a built in corset. I definitely can't go without anything. Advice?

Ooo..this is tough. Everyone with a larger bust that I know who did it also had boning in the dress for added support. Could you talk to a seamstress (maybe another one) about adding an inner corset with the cups to give the dress more structure? I might be talking crazy...

Other than that... I can only think of larger bust low back bras....which are hard to find. I personally have never worn one... so I am no help =(

Thanks! I have been looking for a low back bra but have had trouble finding one that works with both me and the dress, and now I'm starting to run out of time.

I too am a DD and had issues with my prom dress. Once the right support was in, I could go blissfully bra free with good support. You may need to look around a bit. Some shops won't do bigger than a C.

So...I googled and found a couple of things...

Someone on weddingbee said this (and there is more advice on that thread as well!!)

I had a low back V on my dress and wear a D cup. I actually had my seamstress modify the only longline bra that would fit me properly. She did a great job and it made my day SO much easier. Perhaps you could talk to a seamstress about altering a bra for you…

There are mixed reviews on this bra...

This has a clear back...which ... I dunno ...but thought I would link it anyways =)

    This was interesting and informative...

Hope you can find what you are looking for =) and PLEASE come back and share...in case I end up in a similar situation =)

Have you tried the Victoria secret backless bra? They're entirely backless (no clear strap) and adhesive on the sides and apparently won't budge!

I would suggest the backless bra- just clear adhesive on side, but with large bust, you may not feel comfortable (I get it! D cup here). What about a low back bra converter? It's just a longer strap you wrap around your waist to your existing bra to keep it on, but you can lower the line of where the strap falls: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-939225/Maidenform-Low-Back-Bra-Converter-K4001-Women-s.jsp?ci_mcc=ci&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=33-310649167-2&CID=shopping15 That way you can at least use the bra you like. How low is the back of the dress?

WOW!! Thanks for the great help!

Some of the suggestions might be tricky. I haven't tried the VS backless bra, but I don't think it comes in the right cup size (assuming I am looking at the right bra). I don't think I can do a clear plastic back bra, because you would still see the back...right? And I think a low back bra converter requires a bra with shoulder straps. Because my dress has sheer shoulders, that might be difficult.

On the other hand, the two stick on bras appear to be worth investigating -- I have had trouble finding them in larger cup sizes. I'm not sure if altering a bra is a possibility. And the info links are great too!! I need to study them a little more.

The back of my dress is below

I was going to suggest the converter that shorebride suggested, but after seeing the back of your dress I don't think that will work. The only thing I could suggest is a backless adhesive bra.

I know your pain, they are finally making more lee back and strapless bras for DD then ever before. Honestly with a dress that low you cant get one that actually connects and actually supports the girls. Look fir cups online, get them sewn in and use the clear double sided tape. It's the closets thing I can think if that will help

I have the exact same problem! My dress is lacking boning so not really giving me shape. I have a GREAT seamstress that has been working on it to provide shape.... I try it on tomorrow and see what has been done. Not sure if you are in the LA area there's a store called Total Woman in La Mirada, the owner Stephanie is very helpful will definitely.have something that will help. If you want I can tell you if my seamstress was able to come up with a solution was I try it on

In my experience, it doesn't seem that sewn in cups provide adequate support for the whole day - I would look in to some adhesive options

Thanks! I am checking out the adhesive route.

Catalina - I live in Illinois and not LA, unfortunately. Even so, I would love to know if altering the dress to add boning is a possibility. Please post after your fitting!!

Other thoughts and suggestions are appreciated as well. Everyone is SO amazingly helpful, and I really appreciate it.

@ Nicole D so, I went to my fitting today, my seamstress added cups, which seems like it would provide enough support. I'm a D so for me its great She wasnt able to add boning which kind of sucks but she told me another bride had the sane issue and she found shape wear that was backless. I will send a picture if the shape wear tomorrow. My seamstress added a clear bra strap to my dress that pulls my dress tight around the waist area and added shape it helps prevent me from looking to "boxy"

Catalina - Thanks for the report. I'm so glad you found a solution! A picture or any other info about that shapewear would be much appreciated. Obviously I'm looking at any and all options.

Others may see it differently, but I would not be so quick to dismiss the low back bra converter. Often there is some flexibility in how low you can position the strap. Perhaps that might still be an option. I don't think sewn in cups work well for larger cup sizes, so I would concur that you probably need a bra.

I had gotten a strapless bra from Lane Bryant (I cannot remember the name at the moment) but it had 2 spots in the back that a band fastened too. We had sewn the bra into my dress except where the band would have gone. The fasteners stopped at the sides. I had a low back too and I'm a DD, it worked perfectly.

You might have to try buying a low back bra online in that cup size (I searched quickly at barenecessites.com and found a few that may work). That site and herroom.com may have some good options for you.
