Setting the date back for insurance

Gabbie, on January 3, 2020 at 7:20 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 13
My fiance and I planned on getting married in 21', but now were worried about the cost of insurance because being engaged is fun and all, but we realized marriage means we would have to spend more each month. 21' is the perfect time for our wedding because there will be a point where were not too busy, but now, it seems we need an extra year to spend. It just breaks my heart that its going be this way because of money. Thoughts? Advice?

I'm sorry, I may be misunderstanding but do you mean like health insurance will be more when you get married?

Can’t you keep separate Policies? FH and I both work for the same school system but until we have kids it will remain cheaper to keep our policies separate

You don't have to be on one insurance plan! In fact, at my company, if your spouses company offers insurance, you cannot be on the same plan. People usually only get on one plan because it's cheaper.

Are you on your parents insurance? Some companies will allow you to stay on I believe. If you have your own insurance through work, it should stay the same. If you have subsidized insurance through the exchange or Medicaid, then the joint income will probably impact that. Have you been able to get an idea of how much more your health insurance costs will increase?

Yeah. My FH and I work at the same company and we are keeping separate insurance! We have the same insurance company but it’s the difference of $40 a month per person ($80) and $180 total if we have the same policy

Honestly we're keeping separate insurances. It's cheaper that way. I make more than him and so mine is a little pricier than his for an individual but even with 2 individual plans it's cheaper than my employee + spouse.
My parents each keep their own policies because my dads is slightly better than my moms and they put my sister on both of theirs so she gets a little of both benefits.

Oh, my god. You guys are all right!! My FH and I had dinner with my dad tonight, and he told us we would have to start paying medical insurance if we got married, which i think hes having a hard time watching his daughter get married (hes got control issues).
I just took it at face value because hes my dad. He doesnt want us not to get married, he just wishes it were farther out (though my date is more than a year away), and i think he did that to prevent us for an extra year. Hes cynical about marriage because of his tough divorce.

I feel so stupid for listening to him withoit doing my own looking. With one quick google search, i saw that we'd be fine. The only thing that should change is car insurance, which is a nonissue for us. Wow, thats a relief!!

Glad we could help! Car insurance should actually go down because you can take advantage of multi-car discounts. Also, being married is viewed as a positive in actuarial terms, same as how your insurance usually drops after 25--you're considered a smaller actuarial risk so your rate drops. When we got married, we compared prices from both our insurers and went with the one that was significantly cheaper.

Idk if that will happen for us because we are both pretty young, and we only have one car together. However, the fact that marriage lowers actuarial risk is really good to know.

Yeah, there’s no way we are joining until we have kids. We have excellent insurance and pay $35 a pay. If we were to join we’d go up to $201 a pay and now that I’ve looked at it until there is more than one 1 child it’s cheaper to remain separate and just put the child on my insurance 🙄. Crazy how this stuff works!

Thats insane. I cant believe joint insurance makes it more than quadruple, and simply opting not to join nullifies that expense?? How weird!
