Selling a dress or Davids Bridal exchanges?

Kari, on October 16, 2014 at 11:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 31

I bought a wedding dress!! However, I don't love it and I want to keep shopping. I am dying for a lace dress, but I bought a non lace dress at David's Bridal. (REALLY wish I could upload the photo Smiley sad) Here is the link: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Taffeta-Scoop-Neck-Ruched-Bridal-Gown-with-Tiering-PK3472_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Silhouette-Mermaid-Trumpet

They ordered the dress for me and are supposed to call when it's in. I know I can't return it, but does anyone know if David's Bridal will exchange it or give in store credit?

Otherwise, who has any luck with selling a dress online? What's the best route? It will be brand new and never worn so I feel like this is in my favor.

Last option would be to buy a reception dress that is lace and maybe more comfortable to be in the for the rest of the night. Thinking about Nicole Miller's Jessica cake cutting dress. http://www.nicolemiller.com/jessica-cake-dress This dress the one I already bought would be at my budget.

They only do store credit. I found out when she had already rung up a pair of shoes and goes "oh BTW you cant return these" I was NOT happy. Did you love the dress when you first bought it?

I LOVE your first dress, but you're the one who has to wear it!

    What about a lace veil?

The david's i bought my dress from would NOT do store credit. they did allow me to exchange it though. i had bought a dress on the first day dress shopping... SO STUPID... and immediately had dress regret the next morning. i tried to talk myself into loving it but i didn't. i put it on craigslist while i continued to shop.

i ended up finding another dress at david's that i loved and they allowed me to exchange the first dress i bought. they wouldn't allow me to just return my old dress for store credit though. but if i found something i liked that was equal or greater value they allowed me to exchange straight across.

    so that's what i did.

Yes, when I was SIGNING she goes "all sales final"... My heart raced a little.

Honestly, I was 5 hours in and EXHAUSTED and stressed. I felt pretty pressured to buy, they kept pulling more and more dresses. I do love how the dress looks on me, I'm hung up on the fact that it's not what I was going for.

    A lace veil may help!

I LOVE the $450 price tag.

I would call the store and ask. If the dress isnt in yet, they may be able to cancel the order!

Totally call and ask. i know they offer exchanges but only cause i asked what if i get pregnant and it doesn't fit. but she did make the comment that if just decide i don't like it, then that's another story.

I think many of us bought dresses that we didn' think we would ever buy. The dress I dreamed about for years, looked horrible on me. The dress I ended up buying, looks less horrible on me Smiley smile but I do love it. Won't see it until January!

Like @nicole said, when did you order it? if they haven't shipped it yet, you might still be able to cancel it... worth a try.

They do store credit. I bought my first dress there right after we were engaged and four months later I exchanged it toward a dress of equal or greater value. Smiley smile

Ok, thanks ladies! This is making me feel better already. I think that it might be the case that the dress I always dreamed of just doesn't flatter me. The one I bought certainly does. I might just try on a few more of what I originally wanted and if it's just not working out, then I'll feel much better about the dress that I have.

My FMIL has very graciously offered to buy me the boots that I have always wanted... so that has me perked up! Do y'all think these will look go with the dress? It's an outdoor, backyard wedding.

I love the dress - it's beautiful, really, really beautiful! Why do you want a lace dress so much? Is there a nostalgia factor for you? I would say, if you're willing to wear a lace dress even if it's less flattering than the one you bought, then yes, reconsider. But I think you should perhaps return to the store, try on ONLY this dress, WITH a veil, and shoes, and jewelry, and look in the mirror and decide honestly if you love the way you look, and it's comfortable.

RE: reception dress.... it is really comfortable? lace can be itchy, so while it won't be heavy to wear, I'm wondering if it's actually comfy... also, if you're tall, you'll need to be careful about not bending over at the waist to hug people - make sure you bend at the knees. Love this DVF style - it's only $348, and love the neckline and back zipper... you could wear this again, I think, more easily than the Nicole Miller one, if that's important to you.

@Rebecca... I just love the look of lace and I feel like it fits my vintagy/country feel for the wedding. I'm not sure what kind of style the dress I bought is... however it is flattering on me. I think the reason that I said "Yes" to this dress was because when I looked at myself, I kept saying, "FH is going to think i look so pretty, he'll love this dress".

do you have a link for the DVF style dress you're talking about for $348...? What is DVF, haha... I'm awful at fashion.

I tried on that exact Nicole Miller dress except the long, gown version. It was the absolute most comfortable. I loved it, except it was around $2,000. Wearing again isn't too important to me because I rarely ever wear dresses. I may keep my dress(es), but I may very well sell them after the wedding.

it's basically the same silhouette as the dress you bought, aside from being strapless. and it's lace. did you happen to see this one when you were trying on dresses?

I'm trying to find it... it might not be on the website anymore.

it was a tulle ball gown. it was a pretty dress, just very, very simple. it definitely NEEDED a sash or something. i, also, had gone dress shopping hoping to find a lace fit and flare. that's what i wanted from the beginning and that's what my FMIL ended up telling she pictured me in. i bought the ballgown though because everyone i went shopping with loved it and my FMIL cried. i woke up the next morning hating it. it came in, i tried it on in the store again and hated it. i felt like a cupcake or like a little girl. i cried over it. i tried to talk myself into liking it. said i was over thinking it. i had bought it for a reason.

eventually, i just... knew i wasn't going to love it. and i hated the idea of getting married, having my dream wedding, and hating my dress. so i went back shopping. went to like, 5+ different appointments. found a couple other dresses that were ok. but i had the hardest time. i went back to david's, because i was told i could exchange it if i found something else, so i figured i'd give them another shot. tried on some other dresses that were pretty but none of them gave me that feeling.

two days after my appointment my consultant called me and left a message. said they'd just got a BRAND NEW dress in, that wasn't even online but it looked almost exactly like that i was looking for. she'd remembered me! so i went back in, put it on and almost cried. it was perfect.

if you feel like your second guessing your dress, don't settle. if you really love it, great. if you don't, keep looking.

i just wanted to link mine because it sounded like what you were looking for and if you went to david's i'm surprised you didn't try it on.

i'll keep trying to find a pic of my first dress...
