Self Conscious Plus Size Bride

Courtney, on December 12, 2016 at 7:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I just got engaged 2 weeks ago. I have a pretty good idea of what I want but it's going and trying on I'm not excited about! If I felt confident in ordering one online I would. Obviously I am going to try an loose a size or 2 but in reality I don't want added stress of buying a dress too small and then not fitting in it the day of. My fiancé loves me and thinks I'm beautiful in anything so it's just finding what I love! Going to a bridal shop who has a selection of plus size gowns is key. I'm a size 26-28 normally. Any help or suggestions of where to look first???

I thought I was gonna feel huge (size 20 dress size which is different from my regular pants size I found) but my dress makes me feel beautiful! I had tons of options at David's Bridal

I felt like crap starting to look for dresses but I had a lot of luck at David's bridal! There are no plus size boutiques near me, sadly.

You are an individual. You are a woman, and you are the same size as countless American women. Newsflash -- He loves you, proposed to you, thinks you are his erotic queen (just the way you are), and he's now thinking about his gorgeous bride walking the aisle to meet him, exchange vows, and walk down the aisle in the direction of your wedding reception -- an event in which every guest will think (and say) how incredibly beautiful you are. Your size? Oh, please, don't lead the "Are plus size brides as beautiful as their size four sisters?" Don't you dare.

You will be stunning -- I can say that because part of my business is walking into a bridal suite and having our collective breaths taken away. Whether she's a two, a four, a six, an eight -- all the way up to the larger plus size brides -- they all -- every single one of them -- look magazine beautiful.

Stop putting your head on another woman's body. Spend the money to have your hair and make-up professionally done (because regardless of your height and weight, your face and body will arrest him. I promise). He's in love with you. He wants you -- forever -- and, he's already made it crystal clear that he's ready to state the truth of his heart quite publicly.

I definitely was dreading going dress shopping... I have my first appointment this weekend to get a feel for dresses, and have a better understanding of what I want before I get more serious about it, and I am starting to feel a little better. You'd be surprised at what options are actually out there. I think a lot of brides, even grooms, feel a bit self-conscious, as we're only presented with brides and grooms that look a certain way. But really, we come in all sizes, and shapes Smiley smile

It seems like the standard is to purchase your dress at your current size, as it is much easier to take something in if it's too big then to let it out if it is too small.

You're going to be marrying your best friend, your soul mate, and you're going to look radiant Smiley smile

We all can have a bit of anxiety when it comes to dress shopping... no matter what size! You have a man that loves you for you and that is a wonderful feeling! Don't worry, your perfect dress is out there and I know that DB had a lot to choose from in all size ranges. If you are worried call ahead, ask what size samples they have available .... look online find a few you love and see if they have them for you to try. That way you can go in feeling confident and with a plan!

I can't remember the name of it to google it. It's in Va Beach. I did find one in NJ though. It's called The Curvy Bride. Attached is an address.

Do not be nervous!! When you find your dress (which you'll just know when you found the one), it'll make you feel beautiful!! Don't worry! I'm size 18 (which is plus size in wedding dresses) and every store I went to had its own plus size section. I will admit, it was a little awkward getting undressed with the retail associate right next to me, but I just kept in my head that its nothing she hasn't seen before! And do not order your dress smaller than you are. Order a dress that fits you. If you loose weight it's easier for the seamstress to take off than having to add on if you bought too small. I suggest trying on ball gown and A like dresses! (They flatter curvier women) I fell in love with an A line!

I wouldn't buy a smaller dress either. I agree with you that that is too much stress. If you do want to loose weight though you can put off dress shopping for a little and try at it. Depending on when you are getting married, a dress doesn't have to be the first thing you do.

Definitely go to shops and try dresses on. Wedding dresses run super small. I am a size 10 in regular dresses but I admit that I was pretty shocked when the bridal store ordered a 16W for me. Also, keep an open mind and be willing to try various styles.

You might be surprised what you find in a boutique. I went to one, expecting to have to try on samples 10 sizes too small but was greeted with friendly faces and a quarter of the store being size 18 or above. I had so many choices that I only tried on stuff my size or larger so I could get a real sense of what it looked like.

There's a lot of dress styles out there that will give you that smaller size look. Mine was a size 22 although regular clotheswise I'm a 16. You can't let that scare you off at all. I walk a lot now and drink water out the whahoo, but I'm not stressing. Hopefully this helps and if you need anything I'm here!

I'm a size 16 and I was DREADING shopping, especially after reading dresses run smaller than usual. BUT, with that said I had the best time shopping. the bigger bridal places will have the bigger sizes and wedding dresses were seriously made for women's bodies. You know how you can walk into a store and take 5 dresses into the dressing room and hate them all? This was not like that. Because these dresses are kind cut like "old timey", (meaning corsets or flattering A-Line ) I felt beautiful in every single one. Don't dread it- just go!
