Second marriage, much older couple, how to find the right dress

I am Mrs. rjd, on January 25, 2015 at 2:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

When I say much older I really mean it! I will be 64 and he will be 75 by the time we get married. I've been a widow for almost 5 years and he's been divorced for 20 years. We want to have a real wedding, not just go off and get married. (I did that the first time, he had the big wedding 50 years ago.) When we first began planning, we thought close family and very close friends, about 50 people, so I planned to just find a nice cocktail suit and he'd wear a suit and we'd have dinner after the ceremony. Well, it's now up to about 125 people so it seems like my dress should be a bit fancier. I know that I cannot and will not wear a white gown. I've looked at photos of mother of the bride dresses because there simply are no wedding dresses for women my age. If I tried to wear one of the styles they promote as "second wedding" dresses, I'd look ridiculous, because it seems that they are targeting women in their 30s, maybe stretching it to 40. So I need help! Ideas, please!

I don't necessarily know where to direct you, but if you're still wanting to be with the style, Floral patterned gowns have been taking off as popular for bridal gowns and I think that it's gorgeous and may be what you could look for to still look bridal, but not be in a fluffy white gown.

Sorry that I'm not much help, but I wanted to answer your call!

Go to a bridal salon and see what they suggest. You can't be the first senior bride they've seen. CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations! Since you don't want to wear white, I suggest going to a salon and ask them to show you dresses for the mother of the bride

    Congratulations!

What style dress do you prefer? Are you ok with sleeveless, or would you like more coverage?

Also, what colors do you favor? Are you a fan of prints?

Have you looked in the formal section of Macy's or other dress stores? Sometimes you can find some beautiful dresses, and since they're not labeled "bridal" they're a little more reasonably priced.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!! That is so exciting for you both! Maybe look at Nordstroms, (again, the formal section) , maybe think about a simpler dress (I've had brides wear suits to big weddings) with some fantastic statement jewelry.

I bet you'll find some great stuff on Pinterest without having to wade through a lot of website; every photo is going to have a link; try this one ( I went to pinterest and put in wedding dress gold older bride). And hey, stop using that ugly word, "older" okay?? ;-)

We've been married before too... I'm 51 and he's 63. He acts 30, I look really young but couldn't see myself in a gown either. I bought a beautiful champagne colored dress at Macys. It's short, has 3/4 length lace sleeves. Sexy (but not too sexy!) and grown up looking yet still dressy. He's wearing a navy suit. Celia is right... Nordstroms, Macys etc. Look at cocktail party dresses. You will find something beautiful to wear on your special day. Congratulations!

Why can't you wear white if that is what you want? If that's not what you want, how about champagne or gold?

A bridesmaid dress that comes in ivory, champagne or blush might be an option. You can glam it up with a sash and jewelry.

My oldest groom was 90 and his "child bride" was only 78 (her middle-aged son gave her away)!

You're in love, you're getting married, you're not old -- wear whatever you like!

Thank you all for your suggestions and input! I found some beautiful MOB dresses online and pinned them to my boards, but now I'm thinking about a cocktail suit. My fiance doesn't want to wear a tux (he says he'd look like a penguin), but I know if I wear a long gown that looks better if he wears one, he will. I really can't start looking yet because I need to lose some weight but I want to try to narrow down my options so that when I do start going to try on dresses, I know exactly what I'm looking for! Chris, to answer your questions, I'm overweight so I don't wear sleeveless and I lean toward solid colors. I hope to not be overweight by my wedding, but if I can't get my arms toned up, sleeveless will still not be a choice. Plus, September in PA can be iffy.

Congrats on finding love again and doing it big. I think it's wonderful that you're having a large wedding because you want to. You're going to find a great dress to get married in if you just go in and ask the professionals, there are a lot of really pretty MOB dresses if a bridal gown is not your style. Just remember, it shouldn't really matter what others think, you are only as old as you feel, and if you've got the confidence than you will rock any dress you put on. I hope your dress shopping experience is a fun one. Good luck!

Oh yes I totally second what Julie said and suggest you check out all of your local department stores, Macy's, JC Penny's, Sears, Dillards, and Belk. They do have a large selection and usually have a lot of sales, plus it will feel more like just a shopping trip and you may not feel as stressed as if you might be with a sales associate at a dress store hovering around you. If you find something in stores but it's not your size you can most likely order it online. That's what we did for our BM dresses. Good luck!
