I'll add another vote for alphabetical. I attended a wedding that went by table and I do think it took a little longer to find my name.

Alphabetical! Less time they have to gather at the door trying to go through all the tables!

Along with our table chart by the door to the reception, Our venue did up printed versions of the table charts and they were left on the tables during the cocktail hour (it was a different room to the reception) so it saved people gathering around the one at the door. I have since seen this done at two other weddings I was a guest at. It was handy to know, and something to read inbetween conversations during cocktail hour.
