Seamstress in Long Island / nyc

Sully, on May 30, 2018 at 4:30 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 14

Anyone know a good seamstress that wouldn't be insanely expensive to have my dress altered at? The store I bought my dress wants a flat $850 no matter how much or how little is done to the dress. I haven't gotten the dress in yet, but I know I will need to have it taken in a bit and hemmed and have a bustle put in. I prefer someone who has experience with wedding dresses, but that isn't going to cost a crazy amount.

TIA!

Hi Sully! I searched the web for "affordable seamstress in Long Island, NY" and received a great range of results with good reviews. I would try doing this to see if you can find any that could potentially work for you! Good luck!

Hi Sully! I would visit "Yelp's 10 Best Sewing & Alterations in Long Island, NY" to see a list of options and read reviews. That should help you make a selection! Good luck!

Rico's in Center Moriches has altered my prom dress, mom's MOB dress for my sister's wedding, and they have tons of experience with wedding dresses! I think they would be way more affordable than what you mentioned!

I know someone fantastic on Long Island. Gus and Sofia Tailors at 87 Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook. Gus is an old school European tailor. He did the alterations on my gown. I need a hem and some major work taking in and lifting up the top of the gown and the whole thing cost $120. He does tons of gown work. He's insanely busy during prom time.

Hey! I am going to go with this lady I found who lives in Jackson Heights. Melfy's Bridal Alterations. She works out of her apartment, but she seems very knowledgeable and knew exactly what alterations I would need. She has you come in and tells you all the things you might need and how much it will cost. She even told me I should take my dress to other seamstresses to get more than one opinion. Which I did and the other lady was nothing compared to Melfy and the same price as the store I bought it from. My dress needs a lot of special details that she noticed immediately and she is charging half the other quotes I've been given. She also has all amazing reviews on Yelp and The Knot. Just note the address on both sites is wrong, but she gives you the correct one when you call her. You can also text her, which she says she prefers.

Not in Long Island, but in South Brooklyn (Industry City). I went to The Wedding Dresser. https://www.weddingwire.com/reviews/the-wedding-dresser-brooklyn/826b1ba6b131a4e0.html
My dress was fairly simple, and needed minor alterations, $150. I was able to send the product link and they were able to give me a quote via yelp messages. Alternations definitely depends on the intricies of your dress, if theres a lot of layers, etc.

She was great. I ended up paying $500 for my dress plus a hem on a bridesmaid dress. My only concern was my dress ended up being a little big on me. I would have liked it more fitted. I had the last fitting 3 weeks before the wedding so I am not sure if I ended up losing some weight unknowingly in those three weeks or what. I thought it fit fine when I tried it on, but on the day of I felt the dress was big on me.

That's not bad, i've been quoted for $650+ for mine. I am seeing her next week so let's see what she says.

How did your experience with her go? I'm considering her as well for my dress!
