Sealing Wood Cookies/Tree Slices

Keren, on August 29, 2017 at 1:12 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 10

What would I need to do to seal untreated wood slices for my wedding NEXT September of 2018? Picking them up today and want them to stay in good shape until then. Would mod podge be enough or would I need something stronger? Thank you in advance! Smiley smile

We had ours sanded then covered in poly to seal them. I am not sure about the mod podge.

We are doing the wood slices, too. I am getting them from Michaels and they are sealed in plastic packaging. I think I will leave them alone till close to the wedding. But I agree with above comment. Just a poly seal will probably work fine. I am going for the raw wood look so I hope to leave mine as they are

I would get some polyurethane to seal the wood. you could also use wood varnish. They both smell pretty rough but they will seal the wood better than mod podge.

You can get spray-on wood sealants. They're likely your best option if you have an outdoor space where you can spray. You don't want to cake on mod podge if you don't have to. It looks like a can of spray paint.

The spray on sealants work nicely, just don't over do it.

@Jenny just be aware that sometimes the ones wrapped in plastic can have marks on them from where light was shining on the plastic but part was covered by a sticker. Sometimes you need to sand them to remove the discoloration

You can pick up any number of wood sealants in quart sizes at your local hardware store. Some will have stains included, but some will be just clear too! Make sure you get a non-high gloss one (unless that's the look you're going for).

Thanks everyone! They were pretty fresh when I picked them up so they are currently laid out to dry for a few weeks. I also picked up a can of poly for when they're ready for it! Smiley smile

If you really an to do it correctly, use one of these two products. Anchor Seal ( Available in multiple colors ) or Pentacryl Green. ( no its not green ). These products seal and protect your finish, but most importantly they prevent the log slices big or small from cracking as they age and lose the even small amounts of water held up in the woods fiber. ( noting is better than creating a memorable masterpiece only to find a few months or years later that the wood has cracked or started to do so and has destroyed the authenticity of the piece you so intended to maintain as a wonderful keepsake. Both of these products can be stained over, painted on and are hand wash and food safe after they have dried for the appropriate recommended time. ( usually 72 hrs for staining, painting or adhering pictures or poems on, and it is recommend that you allow 15-30 days prior to using and washing. ( a bit overboard in my experience with using this, but I am only regurgitating the instructions as best I recall. ). I hope this helps. Enjoy your project and big event. Cheers.

Wood sealant. Mod podge isn't strong enough.
