Save the Dates vs. Invitations

Megan, on May 1, 2011 at 8:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

We are having a pretty small wedding and seriously doubt most (if any) out of town family will come. I'm sort of confused on the difference between the Save the Dates and Invitations to begin with, but which am I supposed to send to people that I'm 99% sure aren't going to go and am pretty much just sending for the formality?

Save the Dates are more specifically for your out of town guests. You send them out about 8 months before your wedding date to give them the heads up that there will be a wedding and they are invitied. This gives them time to save and plan to be there. My FH thought that most of his familiy would probably not come since we're in NJ and the all live in NC but to his surprise most of his familiy will be coming. We may not have gotten such a good response if it wasn't for the Save the Dates. I would send them anyway. You just may be surprised

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on them, vistaprint does a 100 free postcard deal. 100 STD = $7.... $12 if you want white envelopes and matching return labels.

A save the date is just that- it is not an invitation, nor a substitute for one. Everyone that receives a save the date will also get an invitation. You may have guests who you will send an invitation only and not a save the date.

If yours is a destination wedding, they should go out 12mos prior, and basically everyone gets one. If yours is an in town wedding, they typically go out between 8-6 mos out.
