    Yes save the dates are only meant to be sent out to people who will actually get invites. Now if you send out the save the date and the tell you they cant make it that's completely different.

    Agreed with others here. If you send a couple or an individual a save the date, then you have to follow up and send an invitation. With the exception of destination weddings, save the dates are sent 5-7 months before your wedding and invitations are sent 6-8 weeks before your wedding.

    100% it is rude. The STD is basically an invite that is early so your guests can plan. It's not a hey you are on a maybe list so if you get an invite congrats you get to come. It's a hey we seriously want you to come, so much so that we are giving you advanced notice.

    As others have said, yes, that would be very rude. If there are people you who should know about the wedding but you don't plan to invite, you can send a wedding announcement after the fact. My cousin did that. He got married in a state far from most of the family, so he invited a few people and sent an announcement with a nice picture to the rest of the family.
