Need to have. Not everyone works 9-5, has financial resources to go to a wedding, buy a gift/give money, NOT make vacation plans, etc within a 2-3 month notice. We've been in situations where only one of us could go because of timing.

Need to have for me! A lot of our guests are out of town and we had an engagement photo shoot included in our photography package, so it just made sense. I could definitely understand it being cut for some people though, there’s other ways to get the word out and if you were on a tight budget, save the dates could be omitted for sure

Nice to have. I think they're not that necessary. I just created a Facebook event. The ones who aren't on Facebook will know when they get the invitation lol

Not at all needed - is that a choice, lol? Tell your VIP's and let the chips fall where they may!!! It is half the fun, lol!!!

Nice to have especially if you're going to have a lot of guests that have to make travel arrangements.

I think save the dates are a good way to announce the wedding, get the event in their head, and prepare your guests to receive their formal invitations. I only paid $50 for 200 at Walmart!

I think Need, but that's only because I'm in the service and entertainment industries, so nearly everyone I know works weekends. And if you have a weekend wedding...

Nice to have, especially if you're in a situation similar to FH and mine - where our venue is close to us but a 1+ hr drive for nearly all of our guests. We sent ours out 9 months in advance.

Need to have for us! It was good for our guest to be able to start planning for time off and travel plans!

I like save the date cards, but it's an added expense that we would rather use elsewhere

We have a popular wedding date. At first I thought they were "nice to have" but now I think it's a must. I think sending a save the date depends on your date. Is it popular? Will people need to travel for it?

Need to have based on the type of reception and reception venue. Also have to take into account your guest, if they will need to travel a distance and/or if they are on a budget - they will need hotel/overnight accommodations.

Nice to have. Word of mouth works well early on, and perhaps just send out the invited a month or so earlier than recommended if some people need to make travel arrangements. Or a wedding website you share via private social media messages to certain guests.
