Save the Date Notice

Tora, on May 10, 2009 at 10:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I was wondering how early do you send out the save the date notices? My wedding is set for Sept 2010 and most of my family will be coming from out of town and I want to make sure that they have ample time to make arrangements. Can some one please help!!!!

6 months prior is good. If you can. . . get magnet save the dates so that it can be posted on the refrigerator.

My planner suggested that I send mine out 6-8 months prior but not earlier. But that was one thing I disagreed with her on, lol. So... I sent mine out 9 months ahead of time and they were magnets. All our guests are coming from out of town and have to book flights, etc. So I wanted everyone to have the date saved so they didnt have to wait until the last minute to make travel arrangements. The magnet included our website and we've been keeping that up to date and getting everyone excited about the big day, so I dont regret sending ours out a little earlier then the norm.

I let people know right when we figured out the details, which was 9 months ahead. I don't see how it could be too early to give people a heads up?

When you send them too early, people do not feel the urgency to make their arrangements and may forget about it, even it is on a magnet they see every day. Remember, they are not living in wedding world the way you are. The timing also depends on your location and time of the wedding. Since your wedding is on a holiday weekend (Labor Day), you do want to let people know in plenty of time. Also, if the wedding is in an area that gets a lot of tourism, you want to let people know about it. 6-9 months is a reasonable time frame. Since it seems mostly family that you are concerned about though, you have word of mouth to rely on as well.

Most people usually jump on me when I say this but I'm not sending out save the dates. Pretty much everyone that is invited knows when it is and that they're invited, but then again we're having a relatively smallish wedding (about 100 people). I don't know.... we have people from out of town but at the same time if they already know about it then I don't feel the need to waste money sending out another thing that's just going to get thrown away. I'm planning on sending out my invites 3 months ahead instead. Also, do you have a wedding website? If not I suggest you make one. You can already start to put things up on that-- so people will be aware of the updates as soon as you get them! Good luck!

A suggestion for Save-the-Date notices would be 6-8 months before your event. However, if you setup a website, say, now, you can let them know and keep them updated. However, not everyone has a computer to check your website, so you may want to send save the dates to those you know will benefit from what I call the -- touchy--feely, type of announcements and send links to your website to all others. Not knowing what type of budget you have, you can create the save the date cards yourself using the Avery or other type post cards papers from any office supply store. Then use your computer graphics or a picture of the two of you and on the back have the recipient's address. Postage is less expensive when using postcards. I hope his information helped.

The norm is 6months prior but I had gottin magnets and were super excited about them so I sent them out between 9 and 10months ahead of time. Also because of the same reason as you a lot of my family is from out of town and would need to buy plane tickets.

I think the guidelines on things like this are just that, guidelines. You need to consider your situation and the people you are inviting.

I am having a destination wedding in Florida and I'm aware most of my family will need time to save (also they don't really take it seriously enough to make arrangements until they know the date and place are set in stone). My Save the Dates just arrived and will go in the mail by the end of June (so 11 months in advance). It seems like a really long time, but this way they will all know they are definitely invited and will be able to check our website for the travel deals we plan to share with them.

I am also sending my invitations out far in advance (probably 4 months before with an RSVP about a month before the wedding date) to remind everyone to make their arrangements if they haven't already. This is a necessity in my family, and I'd like to know ahead of time who is coming so I can take care of the OOT bags.

I do wedding stationary and since most of your guests will be coming from out of town...I would suggest 6-8 months before, especially since it's a holiday weekend. Checkout my storefront for ideas.

I am getting married this coming September and I sent my save the dates out inside my Christmas cards, it was a little earlier then the books said but I saved on postage and envelopes (if anyone says it is too early just say you were being green!)
