Sandwiches for reception dinner?

Nicole, on May 23, 2017 at 6:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 33

I found a local pizza, pasta, and grill that has delicious sounding sandwiches that are available for catering. The sandwiches are served on ciabatta bread and the selections are: Turkey Apple Brie, Grilled Chicken Caprese, and a Smoked Turkey Club. I looked in to it and the sandwich sizes are generous in size. I would serve these with caesar salad and cheese pizza for kids. I will also have a brie kisses, hard meats, cheeses, vegetables, and fruits for appetizers.

I am wondering if this will be underwhelming for the guests or filling enough. I am having a casual, semi-DIY wedding and my budget is very low. Doing the sandwiches and apps this way will average me out to about $12 a person.

Edit- The wedding will be in August (Really hot in Idaho) and dinner will be served around 6:30.

Thank you!

You need to have a lunch wedding if you're going to serve sandwiches. Reception should be around noon. It's too light for dinner.

Another option would be to have a late morning wedding with a brunch reception. Breakfast/brunch receptions tend to be cheaper than dinner.

This sounds great for a lunch/early afternoon wedding! What time were you hoping to have your reception?

The requirement is for you to host your guest with a meal so technically this is fine. However, I would say this is a know your crowd type of

situation and you need to be very clear to your guests that this is a very casual reception - perhaps include menu on your enclosure cards. Personally, I would have no problem attending the wedding of a close friend or loved one with this menu as long as it was local. I would not purchase a plane ticket and pay for a hotel for an out of state wedding to eat sandwiches though.

I think this menu is fine for lunch, not dinner.

I think it's good for lunch, but not really enough for dinner, honestly.

I would be very very underwhelmed for an evening reception. Actually, I'd probably leave and get dinner elsewhere to be honest. And sorry to be critical, but this would be true even if the wedding was local (the only exception being extremely close friends and immediate family).

On the plus side, you could probably skip most types of alcohol and just serve beer

Look into catering buffets. Im not saying its for a wedding (granted im having about 30-40ppl fam and close friends) and getting 3 entrees and 3 side s for $13. The'wedding menu' for the same food starts at $18.00..

I've heard brides, particularly in the South, having BBQs that are pretty cheap. I think the key for me would be to have some hot food (that wasn't pizza)

Nicole, have you thought about having a breakfast/brunch reception? They're relatively cheaper and will likely be enjoyed more than sandwiches, even at lunchtime. You should look into it.

Search for food trucks that also cater. Theyre usually way cheaper!

I love food trucks. Oh my gosh, a good food truck is better than most plated meals.

This does sound like it'd be better suited for a lunch reception. Have you thought about possibly doing a burger or hot dog/brat bar with several sides? While that too could be seen as a lunch reception type it also is common to have for dinner for cookouts and some holidays. So it would still fit your casual theme as it's not stuffy and you'd be able to give more dinner type options at a reasonable price.

I would expect a hot meal for a 6:30 wedding. Don't get me wrong, I love sandwiches but I don't think it's appropriate for an evening reception.

Glad you decided not to do sandwiches! Lots of BBQ catering companies tend to be less expensive. I would look into that! Or as @Elizabeth suggested look into a brunch wedding.

@Nicole S. You could see if that restaurant has pasta options that would fit your budget

    Hi @Nicole

I saw you're pretty close to your date, so I did some googling for you. Do you know that in your area Goodwood BBQ does a special wedding package for only $12.49/pp? That's just 50 cents more than you planned to pay, and you get smoked turkey, pulled pork, potatoes with gravy, dinner rolls and a caesar salad all included. They also have some options on their "platters and combinations" men that are even cheaper than that, and you still get a ton of hot food.

    This is their catering menu:

I hope they have what you're looking for!

Sounds like you are switching from sandwiches but please consider having some entrees that don't include cheese. I saw when you picked your sandwiches they all had cheese and so does the salad. Also consider having something vegetarian.
