Sad after first dress fitting? Normal?

Jordan, on September 10, 2022 at 12:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
My wedding is in 3 months and I had my first dress fitting today. I bought my dress because it was the style I wanted - lace, sleeved, romantic/vintage. I really liked it when I bought it and because I was on a budget, loved the price even better since it was a discontinued dress I got it 80% off!

Fast forward to today. I put it on and when I looked in the mirror, I hated myself. I felt frumpy and not beautiful at all. Is this normal? We have to take in some parts because I am so petite (5’0”) and I also need to figure out how to either tape my boobs or find a backless bra which is also overwhelming me since the dress is backless.. just not happy with how I look. Just curious if anyone else had this regret/sad feeling after their first fitting? Thank you Sad after first dress fitting? Normal? 1Sad after first dress fitting? Normal? 2

    Hi Jordan,

The dress you chose is beautiful. Hopefully once you have the dress altered and accessorize it exactly the way you want it you will love the whole look. You look really pretty! I love the train and back. Congrats!Smiley heart

I think it’s totally normal! I wasn’t sad per say after my first fitting, but I love it so much more now that it fits better! I think don’t panic until the third fitting.

I've heard from a couple girls that had a similar experience with their dress. It didn't feel right the second time they tried it on. My future sister in law is second guessing hers. My cousin tried on hundreds of dresses and picked one. She wasn't sure about it, but stuck with it and it turned out beautiful.

I'm sure you will be fine, but if it's really bothering you maybe consider getting another dress if you have time.

A great tailor can work wonders with your dress. Be kind but assertive and confident what your vision is. My alterations cost half the cost of the dress. I had them use some of the bottom of the dress to create a modesty piece so my chest didn’t show, the built in a bra right into the dress and figured out how to accommodate my requests. I had lots of alterations to fit my figure. Best of luck. ❤️

Totally normal. Consider that the lighting in the area may not be the most flattering, your hair and make-up isn't done, etc. There are a lot of factors that will go into your dress looking flawless on your wedding day! I also don't think you look frumpy at all, and your dress is gorgeous!

That's a super normal experience. When I tried my dress on when I went to the boutique to pick it up, it fit so terribly. The straps were so long I wouldn't have been able to wear the dress in public, I felt like I was swimming in the waist area, etc. I really thought I made a huge mistake picking my dress. It wasn't until my second fitting appointment when the straps were where the needed to be and all the hemming was done that I genuinely felt good in my dress. Seamstresses are truly magicians.

You mentioned that your dress was backless. Have you thought about having cups sewn into the top of the dress? That's what I'm doing with my dress (also backless), so I'm not even worrying about a bra on the big day. You could also wear a sticky bra or nipple covers if you still wanted some kind of coverage.

Hi yes the dress already has sewn in cups! Unfortunately they offer no support (I have a larger chest due to a breast aug) I have been looking into taping or a sticky bra to help flatter them a bit better as I’d like some type of cleavage that looks nice on the top half. She is also going to bring the the dress in the armpits to help me feel more “secure” up top so I’m hoping that helps too. I am cautiously optimistic for my next fitting on October 22nd. I feel like I’m also very overwhelmed with the whole process due to budget as well as the fact that I am donating my eggs in the next few weeks so que hormones as well. Trying to be strong here with the process!

I felt the same way at my 1st fitting. I hated my dress, it looked horrible on me and I wanted to get a new one. It was too big everywhere and way too long. I just could not imagine it would ever fit me right. However after the 3rd fitting I loved it again, it fit like a glove. My seamstress worked magic. Trust me, after a few fittings you will love it again.

I wanted to come back and update as I really struggled with my self image after my first fitting. I am here to say that when people say a seamstress can work magic, they absolutely can!!! I am so thrilled with my dress and in love! I cannot wait to put my dress on again on my wedding day!
