Rsvp holdouts

Katie, on October 15, 2019 at 6:46 AM Posted in Planning 0 22
Our wedding is in 11 days! How did that happen?! It’s both exciting and terrifying! :-D Our RSVP date was October 1st, and we sent the invitations out the second week of August, since so many of my FH’s side will be traveling. We’re down to our last few holdouts on RSVPs, and now we’re to the point our venue is wanting final numbers. I contacted these guests late September, and they assured me they were coming, and once they figured out travel logistics they’d send the RSVP back. They’ll be traveling across country, so I totally understand it’s a lot to figure out, but that was 3 weeks ago now that I spoke to them, and still no word if they’re for sure coming. I’m not sure what to do. I hate to bother them again, I really feel like I’m pestering asking twice, but our vendor needs the final count by Friday. I feel like with how far they’d have to travel if they haven’t gotten logistics figured out by now, they’d be hard pressed to really make it. We totally understand if they can’t. East Coast to California is a long way, so we always knew many of his friends and family wouldn’t be able to make the trip, but do I just assume at this point they’re not coming? RSVPs has definitely been the hardest part of this process!

They have had enough time for the official RSVP. It sounds like it's time for y'all to start making the difficult phone calls and point blank asking if these guests are planning to attend.

I agree, call them and just tell them your vendors need a final head count. I think some people forget how big of a process all the planning is and how important it is to know a guest count... good luck! 😊

I would never just assume anything. Can you reach out to them again today and ask if they were able to sort out travel arrangements as you want to be certain for your headcount that you’re turning in? If there hasn’t been any contact since, 3 weeks is a long time— it seems as possible that they planned their travel and forgot to
update you or didn’t follow up figuring they’d already said yes as the idea that they didn’t end up making the plans and won’t be coming and didn’t mention it. Especially since they did already tell you they were planning to attend, I’d definitely re check in.

I would just send them a message saying since you haven't heard back you will assume they are not coming, that you are sending in your final headcount today, and that you are sorry they aren't able to come but home to see them soon.

    Done. People are rude.

Call them and say something like: "Our venue needs the final numbers by tomorrow, will you be able to make it? We have to have a final answer tonight so we can turn these numbers in." make sure you call instead of texting them, as calling will directly connect you and they can't ignore you! Good luck! I understand that you don't want to keep bugging people about whether or not they are coming. You don't want them to feel pressured. However, you went through all the trouble of designing, buying, addressing and sending those invitations. They are being extremely rude to keep you hanging like this. I get that most people don't understand the importance of the RSVP these days. But you've already reached out to these people once!! They no longer have any excuse not to let you know.

Call them back, each and every one, and tell them you must have a firm yes or no--either way--today. It's as simple as that. Nothing personal, just trying to give your caterer and venue an accurate head count.

I haven't even sent my invitations yet, but I've already told everyone in my family that they better not pull this crap on me. If you can't make it, I'm so sorry, and you will be missed. But I'll be totally pissed if you just ignore me and don't respond.

One of my oldest male friends (for over 46 years) hadn't sent his RSVP, but I was sure he was coming. RSVP deadline passed, and I'm 11 days out. I just texted him this morning. He responded with a picture of the RSVP, said oops and advised me to elope! lol Yes, he's coming, but I'm still trying to pin down a few more. mostly family members!!!!

Omg I SO feel you! We’re also the 26th! Our problem wasn’t even the OOT guests, its the people who are 10 minutes away! Its SO much drama to explain in a comment but people just really try to take advantage. I know that it has fed me up at this point and I can imagine how you’re feeling. Just be straight foward and honest. “Hey sorry to bother you but our venue and vendors need to know our final guest count by Thursday. (Don’t tell them friday.) Please let us know if you’re able to come. Unfortunately, if we don’t get your response by then we’ll have to exclude you from our final count. We hope to see you!” After we did that, my cousin of 5 people cancelled on us, and didn’t even tell us ourselves! Luckily we were able to sort it out with the venue. Good luck!

Oh my gosh, 5 people is a huge difference when you're talking wedding planning and getting accurate numbers for your location! I'm glad you were able to sort it out with the venue! It is kind of surprising which RSVPs we're waiting on. Most are really close friends who we wouldn't have thought would miss our wedding for the world, and I have a feeling why they're holding out. Maybe easier for them to not RSVP at all instead of feeling bad sending in the official "sorry, we can't make it"? Hopefully we'll hear soon. We do understand if folks can't make it! We just need to know!

I hope your 26th day goes smoothly and is beautiful! :-)

Ha! That did happen with one of mine too! A good friend who I've known for 15 years, and lives in town, so I thought it was weird I hadn't heard. I contacted her and she said she'd sent the RSVP back weeks ago as a 'yes'. Few weeks later we got the actual RSVP in the mail, with a note that said her husband found it sitting on the coffee table ready to be mailed out, and she'd just mailed it in her mind LoL! That's why it is good to check and not just assume! Stuff happens! I hope you're able to get the last of your responses soon!

I super don't want them to feel pressured, and I do feel awkward about bugging them twice now. But, like you said, we went through a lot of effort to make sure people had plenty of time to make arrangements since we knew so many would be traveling, and we made the RSVP part pretty easy. Stamped and addressed return envelope, link to the website, then a direct link the RSVP section when I contacted them the first time. We'll see what happens now that we've contacted them again. I hope to know soon. The "we got loads of time before we have to worry about that," is officially over! There is no time!

I hope your invitation process goes smoothly! Sounds like you'll be on top of it, and that's definitely the way to go! Good luck!

Oh my gosh, right? I mean, I like to hope they're not trying to be rude. I think some really want to come in their hearts, and are just having a hard time coming to terms with the fact they're not going to be able to make it. But we need them to come to terms, because we're out of time! We do totally understand, especially with the travel, but we just need to know for sure. No hard feelings if they can't make it, we always knew it would be difficult with the distance, but send back the already addressed and stamped envelope, or follow the link to the website I sent you!

You're super right, and you can't assume anything. There were folks I assumed weren't going to make it, but turns out their RSVP got lost I'm the mail and they are coming! One of my best friends who I thought wouldn't miss it for the world, and figured her RSVP must have also gotten lost in the mail or maybe the invitation itself didn't make it to her, turns out she won't be able to make it because her mother is very ill, and she was waiting as long as she could to make the decision because she was hoping things would get better. So, moral of that story is that you're right and you can never assume. Hopefully we'll hear back from the last few folks soon, and get our final numbers and figure out how much we're looking at out the door!

They had time. I know it's frustrating. My wedding is this saturday, I mailed out 75 invites and got 5 RSVP's back. All I hear is "well you know i'll be there" it would be nice to have not wasted all that money on postage

Oh my gosh! Only 5 of 75?! I am offended on your behalf! No, you don't "...know I'll be there," which is why you send out RSVPs. I don't get it. Are these people who have never planned a wedding or a big event, where every person coming is a place setting (which costs money)? Yikes! Well, I hope your wedding this Saturday is lovely and goes smoothly! :-D Thinking good sunny thoughts!

That’s why I’m doing my RSVPs online! I know I would be super frustrated wasting a bunch of money on postage to have so many not send them in! I think it’s time where you have to call. If you assume they aren’t coming and then they show it would stink not have enough food/ seats for them after traveling all that way.

YUP. That way even if people don’t bother, at least I saved the return postage.

Call them, say you need an answer right now either way. YOU are not being a bother, they are! If they got their act together, you wouldn’t need to hunt them down.

Honestly this is my worry also and that in the end ARENT WE the ones losing money? Each seating counts ! It’s expensive !

this was going to be my forum question . If you RAVP and have 1 week cancellations , do you lose the money or can you request to have money deducted ?
