RSVP envelopes - to stamp or not to stamp? That is my question...

Tara, on February 22, 2011 at 1:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Customarily you would stamp the RSVP envelope....but if we're wanting people to visit our wedding website and RSVP there, would we then NOT stamp the RSVP envelope, or stamp them all anyway?

I would be tempted to not even include the envelope if your intention is for them to RSVP on the website. That way they won't be confused and you won't be wasting postage.

I agree, if you are putting them in your invitaitions, stamp them.

If you have an envelope (meaning people could use the RSVP card to RSVP by mail), you'll likely want to stamp it, because that is really the only way to get people to send back the card. Alternatively, you could leave out the envelope, and just have online-only RSVPs. Or you could include a stamped envelope only in those invitations going to people you think don't have a computer or couldn't manage the online RSVP process.

Some people might prefer to send the actual rsvp card instead of going online. believe it or not, guests get very confused when it comes to options, figuring out how to rsvp online, etc. so to be on the safe side, i'd stamp the envelopes since you already have them.

If you're sending RSVP cards with envelopes, stamp them. If you want people to RSVP on your website, don't send RSVP cards with the invitations.

Did you order them yet? Are you looking to save money? Have you considered RSVP postcards? They cut your postage in half.

I vote, put the postage on the one's that might not do the internet... grandma, great uncle, etc. Friends your age - just do the RSVP card directing them to the website.

I heard though that RSVP postcards take a whole lot longer to get back to us in the mail than envelopes?

Postcards carry first-class postage $0.28 and should be delivered just as quickly as a first-class envelope ($0.44).

Actually, I just tested the postcard vs. standard letter mail rates this past week for a local client. The invitation arrived on Wednesday, the postcard was 3 days behind. Both were mailed at the exact same time to the same address. It is part of our design services to check your invitation postage by mailing you a sample of your invitation. This time I tested the respond postcard separately because I had been hearing about a delay. Myth is TRUE!

But as far as stamping the responses, I agree with the other comments. Either stamp the envelopes, or opt for postcards. If you want everyone to respond via website, do not include any blank lines on the respond card, simply indicate how you want to receive their reply, and leave out any envelopes. I would include a phone number for those without internet access if you just don't want all those little cards going through the mail and the extra postage.
