Room block.

Christin, on July 22, 2019 at 12:26 PM Posted in Planning 1 5
I am debating if I should do a hotel room block. The hotels that is link to our venue wants us to book 10 rooms. I know not all my guest will book a room and I dont want to be responsible for paying for the empty rooms. Should i just let my guest know what hotels they can stay at but they wont be able to get the discount?

Are they asking you to commit to paying for those 10 rooms of your guests don’t book them. Usually they will give you some time to try to fill them before they make you commit. If so I guess I would just recommend hotels for your guests. If they are able to give you a group rate with no commitment for a while maybe you can reach out to people you know will travel and help them get the best rate. Good luck

10 is a pretty standard minimum for room blocks- some hotels will give you 10 block rooms complimentary and others will have a financial commitment regardless of number of rooms you try to reserve. Try to reach out and get a feel for how many guests will actually be staying before deciding. Also note, many hotels only require a 90% fill rate meaning if you block 10 rooms you have to book at least 9 of the 10 or you will responsible for the 10th room if it doesn’t get booked. We have mostly out of town guests for our wedding and unfortunately our hotel has a financial commitment. That being said we have 40 rooms blocked off to start because I know at least 90% of them (36 rooms) will get filled. We are actually hoping to be able to add more once those fill because we have so many out of towners. Hopefully this helps a little.

We are thinking of doing a room block also. The hotel where we are having our wedding has an 80% fill rate and a 10 room minimum to block. We know we can fill those so it’s a good idea for us. I would say if you know for sure you can fill the rooms then do it but if you don’t think you can don’t. I made a list of all of our out of town guests and there were so many I know we can fill 8/10 rooms.

Most hotels give you a date to call by and cancel any remaining rooms to prevent being charged for the unbooked rooms. We blocked out 18 rooms and just have to call 2 weeks before the wedding to cancel the remaining rooms. I have a reminder set in my phone so I don't forget.

Hey Christin! Did you decide to do the hotel block or not?
