Roast Turkey Dinner as Wedding Meal- Need Second Entree Suggestions!

Trish, on July 31, 2016 at 10:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

My fiance and I are getting married on October 29th and would really like to serve a full Turkey Dinner (Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, vegetable) for our buffet meal. My question is: What else should we serve if people don't like turkey?

Our venue has good steak tips, should we serve those or does it not compliment the meal? Should we do something like a Mushroom ravioli or other pasta, a fish? Or is the turkey dinner enough?

His relative actually served the same meal years ago and did not offer another option with no complains. I am wondering if this is a faux pas?

I wouldn't do mushroom ravioli. I love mushrooms but that can be an unpopular opinion. Serve another more universal option like veggie lasagna. And please get this professionally catered. No one likes food poisoning and cold food. ETA- please don't use other people's lack of complaints as a reason to go through with something. Have you ever complained to a bride or close family/friend of the bride about her wedding? Probably not. It's rude.

I would do a vegetarian pasta dish and a red meat if you can afford both. Probably would stay away from mushroom ravioli. A lot of vegetarians I know loathe mushrooms.

It sounds to me like this is being professionally catered... I assume that's what you mean by "our venue has...".

    ETA - spelling is hard.

I hate mushrooms but think I'm probably in the minority. I do think you need a veggie option, though. Maybe eggplant parm or pasta primavera?

I tend to think two meat options plus a vegetarian option is best. In your case, I would go with turkey, ham, and see what veggie options your caterer offers.

    Another vote for vegetarian entree!

If you can add 2 items then the second one I'd do is red meat.

I dislike turkey so another entree would be good - my family usually does turkey and chicken at the same time since only half of us will eat the turkey.

I'm thinking what everyone else is: two meat options (beef tips sound delicious) and one veggie option. BTW, turkey dinner sounds awesome. If our wedding wasn't in September, I'd go full Thanksgiving!

It's always good to have two entree options. People can get both if they want them or one or the other. I would stay away from any type of entree that has a lot of mushrooms because mushroom is a vegetable that people either love or hate. Pasta can get messy for people dressed in nice clothes, so I might try to avoid things with sauce. I think turkey and ham is a good option. Make sure you have veggie options, too.

If you only have 2 options, I agree that you should do the turkey dinner and a pasta option, but not mushroom ravioli. I love mushrooms and can eat them by themselves. On the other hand, my mother gags even at the sight of mushrooms.

If you can choose 3, do the turkey, another meat, and a pasta option.

A veggie option is an absolute must and like a previous poster said, I would go with veggie lasagna. If you can afford a veggie option and another meat option, I'd do steak or some type of red meat.

Sounds delicious! I would have the beef tips in addition to the turkey.

If you're set on only doing 2 entree options, maybe a pumpkin or spinach ricotta ravioli? I love meat, but I could get pretty excited about either of those options, and they make sense with the other things you're offering.

I would say either a vegetarian option, or ham. You're essentially wanting to serve a thanksgiving type of dinner, and literally everyone I know usually does turkey or turkey and ham. So it seems like a pretty common practice. If you go vegetarian, I would recommend a pasta of some sort, but I don't think I would go with mushroom ravioli, as mushrooms can be very hit or miss with people.
