Ring stuck... On someone else's finger!

Kimberly, on September 16, 2012 at 9:46 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Getting married in 3 weeks. I let my friend try my ring on again (she has done before, and yes I know that I my fault so please don't scold about that). She had been drinking so I think her fingers were swollen and when she couldn't get it off she just kept trying hard and harder to get it off. I told her to stop because she was making it worse but she was drunk and wouldn't listen. Her finger is so traumatized now that it is so swollen that it will take DAYS for it to come down enough to get it off. I think she wants to cut it off and I am so devastated but how can I tell someone no about a choice that involves her body? She is scared that the circulation is getting cut off. It looks fine to me, just tight. I'm so sad and scared and angry at myself. FH is in Vegas for bachelor party so no one else to cry to. Anyone have to have their ring cut off? Could you tell after it was soldered back? I'm so sad and stressed and I just don't want to have one more thing to worry about.

Oh and p.s. we've already tried EVERYTHING to get it off. All types of lubricants, ice, anti inflammatories, elevation, diuretics......

If a doctor has looked at it and said finger is OK, I'd just give it another week for the swelling to go down.

If doctor says circulation is being cut off, then cut off the ring.

Don't worry, no one will be able to tell the ring was cut and soldered.

I agree with Nancy. What metal is the ring made of?

If she gets it cut off, take it to the jeweler to do so, they will take care with it. The doctor will not be so nice.

If she was able to get it on, she should be able to get it off when the swelling goes down. Just wait a few days, as long as circulation isn't being cut off.

It's white gold. I agree if we wait a few days but it's just trying to convince her to do that. My jewelers is open tomorrow so I am hoping she will at least wait until then.

My question is: Why did you let her try on YOUR ring?

Wait a few days. The swelling will go down and it will come off.

Oh goodness! I had a few people try to get me to let them try on my ring while it was too small for me, I told them hell no I wasn't letting them. I agree that you should let the swelling go down. And my ring was wayyyyy small and they had to plate it to make it fit me and you can't tell it still looks perfect so don't stress one way or another you will have your ring back on the RIGHT person's finger and it gives you a good laugh later down the road

White gold shouldn't be difficult to cut and solder back.

Have you talked to her today yet? Unless her finger is turning blue, it should come off in a couple of days.

Thank you, that makes me feel so much better. She just texted me and said that it is still swollen. I've asked if it's better, worse, or the same. Still waiting to hear back. Thanks for the encouraging words, Karissa. Really helps right now considering how much I've beaten myself up about it already.

    Hmm...WD40?

    this from eHow:

Lather soap all over your finger. Put your finger under warm water. Pull on it until it slips loose.

Envelop your finger from the ring up as tight as you can with clingy plastic food wrap. Grease up the ring and your swollen finger below the clingy wrap. Wait a couple of minutes ,then pull the ring and the clingy wrap at the same time.

Spray window cleaner on the ring. This works better than lotion because it doesn't damage the precious stones and leaves the ring shiny when you finally get the ring off your swollen finger.

Wrap tape around your finger just past the ring. Leave the tape on for 30 minutes. Ice your hand while holding it above your heart for another 15 minutes. Take off the tape and spray window cleaner on your finger. Twist the ring around your finger while pulling it off.

Also, my ring gets loose when I'm COLD.

I'm just surprised she could get it on in the first place. My fingers got swollen while I slept, and I could barely get it off, once I did get it off, I couldn't get it back on.

ALSO, tell her to drink tons of water and lay off salty food.

When my grandmother was in the hospital they wrapped her finger with rolled gauze to get her wedding band off her finger.

If you have to get it cut off go to a jeweler.. find one that has a local shop and they can usually have it fixed within a day or two, for about $60...and you won't be able to tell. (My engagement ring got stuck after my finger got swollen from an injury and thats what I did.)

    I also agree with Nancy.

My engagement ring was too large, so I had it sized down. No big deal, it looks exactly the same as it did before (white gold too).

Your local fire dept can cut it off. They make ring cutters.
