Ring Repair Vent...

Melissa, on November 24, 2013 at 2:50 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hi Ladies. I haven't been around much because there's been a lot going on. But I have to tell you this story.

I took my engagement ring in last Thursday to get my prongs buffed because they were really sharp, scratching FH and it ripped a couple shirts. Went back to get the ring on Wednesday and it was WORSE. One prong was like a pyramid with a sharp point. So they sent it back again. I go back once again yesterday and feel the prongs and it seems it's all fixed. Until I'm driving home and notice one prong is higher than the others. I get home and look really close and all prongs are different heights AND now there's a dent in the side of the ring.

At this point I contact corporate and finally the third person I get to seems to be able to help me. After some discussion, we come to the conclusion I will take my ring to the store and they will overnight it to her so she can have a master jeweler look at it. (cont below)

But from what has already been done to the ring she doesn't know if it can be fixed. My ring has been discontinued so I can't get a new one of the exact ring. We start talking about what will happen if it can't be properly fixed. And until this point I didn't know how attached I was to the ring. I always had the mind set ring or no ring, I was marrying him. And then all the sudden having to think about never seeing the ring he got down on one knee in the snow with last Christmas Eve again I broke down and started crying.

I'm praying they can fix it. I'm madder than hell about it since it was just supposed to be buffed, it's not even something I did to the ring that they can't fix, it's them screwing it up this bad. But I'm playing nice since the fate of a replacement ring will be in their hands.

And to top it off FH is hunting all weekend so I've been crying looking at new rings online. I don't want a new ring Smiley sad I want MY ring.

I'm sorry this has happened to you Smiley sad It sucks that they messed up and now you're the one that is disappointed. Not ideal, but even if they can't totally fix it, you can always keep it as is if you don't want to replace it.

If I keep it, they have lowered one of the prongs so much that when they lower the other three to match it, it won't even be able to hold the diamond in.

I'm hoping they don't make it a fight. FH got an unbelievable deal on a set that came with a wedding band. I'm not settling for less total carat weight between the engagement ring and wedding band, and what they have right now for that amount costs at least double what he paid.

But yes I am thankful they are taking fault, and their customer service at corporate is amazing. The manager at the store wouldn't even look at me when I took it in to be sent to corporate. I'm sure she got reamed a new one since she is the 'quality inspector' of the repairs.

Those butts better replace like for like, not value for value - that's a cop out business move and absolutely unacceptable. Diamond and metal prices fluctuate all the time so if there's any price difference between a like-for-like quality ring for you - they should just suck it up and take the hit to their corporate wallet.

I really hope things get worked out for you. Best wishes.

Why can't they just put new prongs on it? When FH bought my ring the diamond was too big for the setting he loved and they just added prongs to it to home the diamond. I hope everything works out for you.

    Thank you ladies.

Rye, I asked the same thing. But she said something about because I don't have traditional prongs, they are like built into the ring and smaller diamonds go up them to the bigger diamond it can get tricky. We will see what happens. I did see in their 'create your own ring' section they have a few similar bands. They are way more expensive. But that's not my problem Smiley smile

I just had the same thing done (center stone lowered, prongs shortened and rounded off) by Helzberg and they did a fantastic job! I'm so sorry yours wasn't the same way!

I'm sorry that this is happening to you. If this makes you feel any better I can tell you that I too was very attached to my old engagement ring. FH decided he wanted to upgrade it with the matching band and at first I was really hesitant because that ring brings back so many memories but I had to realize that ring or no ring those memories are still there. The memories are not in the actual ring. Plus a new ring could symbolize a new chapter in your lives (marriage) and will create new memories with that ring. I do understand how attached you can be to a ring but IF you have to get a new one just remember that the memories are still there and this new ring will symbolize a new chapter in your lives, as his wife.

That really sucks! Luckily, they should be able to take care of it for you. I agree with Rye, they should put new prongs on it. Don't be afraid to get a little aggressive to get this fixed. You did the right thing contacting corporate. Just because you got a good deal, does not mean it should be less of a priority for them. I'm so sorry.

I saw your post KirstenMichelle. I'm so glad yours worked out! I'm wondering if the jeweler this store sends things out to just sucks. FH bought the ring at this same location and when he had it sized, it came back soldered with the wedding band. When they took it apart, there were burn marks but they were able to get a replacement ring and all of this happened before he even proposed so it wasn't a huge deal.

That is very true Kayla. My mom said the same thing to me last night. And we already had our engagement pictures done so at least we have those too.
