So to give you a synopsis, we’ve been together for about 6.5 years and my fiancé proposed back in February on Valentines Day. I said yes of course and was super excited, but the ring he picked for me really surprised me. This is blunt, but I really hate it- it’s not my style at all. When we talked about getting married before I always told him I only wanted a diamond if it was black, otherwise I’d want a gemstone, but he had in his head that diamonds equal engagement and that his family would give him a hard time if he didn’t get a traditional diamond. To make it worse, he also decided to get a heart shaped ring, it’s not a single heart shaped stone but rather a heart shaped setting covered in tiny diamonds. I’m NOT a heart person, and I feel like this is a little bit my fault because on our first vday together he bought me a heart necklace and I never told him I didn’t like it- but I NEVER wear it. I wore it on that vday and it has been in my jewelry box ever since. I’ve been battling with myself about just sucking it up and trying to learn to like it for months, and I just don’t. I forget to put it on after I take a shower and he gets so upset when he notices. I also can’t just pick a wedding band I like and just wear that after the wedding because he bought a set so he already has a wedding band that matches. I really want to love it and I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I plan to wear it forever and at this point I feel like I’m looking forward to the appropriate anniversary when I can ask for a replacement. Also, part of why I didn’t tell him immediately is because he told me he bought it a year ago, so I knew he couldn’t replace it and I knew we wouldn’t be able to sell it for practically anything because diamonds don’t retain much value so I felt stuck. Now it just weighs on my. The other day his sister was up from TX and asked to see it and just said “sweet,” and gave me a look I can’t explain. Do I tell him now, like 5 months later?
Also, we had a major problem with sizing, he got the ring way too big and we had to fight with Kay because they took longer than we were quoted, them broke it, then told us 6 more weeks (after they’d had it 8 weeks) to get it replaced. I feel like he’s going to ask why we went through all that if I hated it all along, I just really wanted to love it for him! I can’t help but wish I hadn’t been so adamant he have a ring when he proposed, I mean he asks by best friend for Christmas and birthday present help shy wouldn’t he ask for help on this? And yes I know he didn’t because when she saw the ring she immediately said “so you hate it, right?”
Sorry this is so long and rambling, thanks for reading if you made it this far!
