Ring Cleaning

Izzy, on September 8, 2020 at 10:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32
The band on my engagement ring seems to have dulled a bit and even feels a little bit gritty. I fear using hand sanitizer so much over the last several months may have contributed to it 😰 I’ve seen that you can wash it with soap and water, but will that be enough? Or should I soak it in vinegar maybe? That seems to be my family’s cleaning go-to lol 😂 Also has anyone else been experiencing this with their ring? Trying to figure out if this may actually be from all the sanitizer use

I wanted to get my ring cleaned before we did engagement pictures but Kay was still closed. I put in a bowl of warm water with a little dish soap and let it soak a few minutes. Then scrubbed it a little with a toothbrush. It was so shiny!

I just went to have my ring cleaned at a local jeweler and he said to clean it with Mr. Clean and scrub lightly with a soft toothbrush. They use the ultrasonic cleaner but it’s something to use between those cleanings if needed!

Does it usually cost anything to get it cleaned by a jeweler? My fiancé bought mine at Daniel’s Jewelers

Ok so this happened with my boss’s ring too. It’s likely from the excessive use of hand sanitizer- it speeds up the process of wearing off the rhodium, which will make the metal look dull and eventually discolored. She ended up having to get the ring replated and then quit wearing it to work.

Take it to a professional. A quick cleaning is free usually. A full professional service of the ring to include replating is $ but good for it.

And this is why I stopped wearing mine in general... Hand sanitizer and hygiene. I will put it back on after coronavirus is gone.

The jeweler I took it to didn’t charge for the assessment or cleaning. We didn’t buy it from them either! They are a “mom & pop” type business. We are likely going to get our wedding bands from them. Depending on where you got your ring from, they may offer complimentary cleanings.

I did the same! I took mine off back in March & don’t plan on putting it back on until all this is over. Sometimes I just open the ring box and admire it or wear it around the house for awhile LOL

White gold rings have to be re-plated with rhodium every few years anyway. Don't worry! Better a dull ring than covid! As for mine, I have a vintage ring from 1910. Unless I'm getting it unltrasonic'd at the jewler I use dish soap, warm water and a toothbrush (soft bristles!) It's super gentle and is so sparkly after!

Actually fun fact, if you ever go to a mall again, any jewelry store will clean your ring for free while you wait. Even if you didn't buy from them. It's a nice industry trick 😉

I was advised not to wear the rings during covid. The alcohol is bad for any jewelry I read it in an article. Especially like pp said, it’s wearing off the white gold layer.

I do this! I always open the box just to see what it looks like. I look once a week, but feels like forever!

Yep, this is one of the reasons why I stopped wearing mine too. Another reason was just being cautious cause people are starting to rob and steal cause they’re getting desperate. I’m sure I’m exaggerating, but it’s better to be careful.

Rhodium plating does wear off and eventually you will have to get your ring replated from time-to-time if you prefer that coating. Otherwise raw white gold is more warm and dull (more of a vintage look).
