Reusable vs. Plastic glasses?

Breena, on May 3, 2019 at 12:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

**Sorry for the long explanation**

I am contemplating using reusable mason jar glasses (with handle) for drinks at my reception. I don't love the look of plastic glasses and I find overall they create a ton of waste. I'm planning on having a cute sign, something like "glass for the night for whatever tastes right". There will be a tag of some sort to label each guest to label their glass. The wedding is also in late-summer, so we are planning on having 2-3 types of sangria from a dispenser instead of table wine and just having a couple of bottles of wine reserved at the bar. My fiancé is worried that people won't actually want to reuse their glass and that it will cause a huge fuss/be a hassle with our guests.

I also am leaning on the assumption that people generally drink the same drink throughout the night anyways and don't tend to switch from wine to liquor or vice versa. Beer will be served in bottles so I'm not really worried about that side of it. I'm planning on having a "rinse" station for the bar tenders to quickly rinse out the glass before they get their new drink just to be on the safe side!

I've never attended a wedding as an adult where I could actually drink, however I've only saw plastic glasses at past weddings. Is this a taboo of some sort to do? As a wedding guest, would you be annoyed by having to reuse your glass?

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!!

I always switch up my drink at weddings so I would be annoyed if I had to keep up with my glass all night. We had real glasses at our wedding and rented enough that guests could always get a new one.

Agree with this. I think a lot of people may want wine with dinner and then something else later on. I always switch up my drinks and tend to put it down on my table sometimes too so I would be annoyed having to keep track of it or have it with me all night. I like being able to just stop by the bar when I'm nearby and get a drink and go with it, not have to get my glass and come back over and over. I agree with Kelly on just ordering/renting enough so people can get a new glass for each drink.

I contemplated the mason jar glass but realized people would have to keep track of their glasses and then have to use the glass no matter what they drank. We had a more casual wedding and our bartenders provided the plastic clear cups. It worked out, no one even paid attention, it's a detail no one remembers.

I also always switch up my drinks at weddings. I almost always have wine with dinner and then something else during cocktail hour/after dinner.

I don't typically switch up my drinks at weddings so I'd be fine with this. My only problem would be keeping track of my glass! I don't think this is a bad idea, just keep a few mason jars at the bar in case people lose theirs, etc. We ordered pretty plastic gold rimmed glasses for our wedding and they worked fine. They were used for wine, beer was in bottles, and we had extras at the water/tea table. they were wasteful, but they were easy to use, cheap, and perfect for our crowd/setting.

Just a tip: You're likely to end up with a lot of the glasses left there at the end of the night. It'll be late, people will have been drinking alcohol, they may not remember the glasses were a gift.

If your intention is not to give them as a gift, you have to think of the clean up. Sometimes you're required to clean rentals before giving them back, etc.

I would be annoyed if I had to use the same glass all night. As others have already said, it actually is pretty common to drink different drinks during the night - wine during dinner, cocktails during dancing, etc. I also would not want to keep track of my glass all night and I more than likely would not bring it home because I'm at the place in my life where all my dishes/glasses match and are good quality. I would not use this mason jar ever again.

Personally, I hate drinking out of Mason jar glasses. Also, between dancing and mingling, I would have a hard time keeping track of my glass.

Maybe if there was a little name tag or place to write a name on the mason jars? I personally would much prefer this over plastic. I really hate the texture and plasticky taste and it gives me anxiety thinking abut all the cups wasted when people are drinking 3+ drinks in an evening. It IS a detail that I remember from weddings. If you think people would be bothered by having to use the same cup, maybe rent extra real cups? But I much prefer real over plastic any day.

I wouldn't want to have to keep up with my glass all night. I would be so annoyed. maybe save that for something smaller like engagement party, bridal shower or rehearsal dinner
