Resized ring, ring is not as perfectly round

Amy, on December 18, 2019 at 3:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
Hi there,
I had purchased my ring from James Allen but was told by them to resize locally with their partner company. I recently resized down to a 4.25 at Jared’s- the size fits perfectly now.

The only thing that bothers me is that the ring itself doesn’t look perfectly round anymore (assuming they initially are factory made). It doesn’t look exactly as it did before but as a smaller size. The width doesn’t look exactly uniform so it almost appears handmade. Slightly warped round. Is this normal with resizing?
I didn’t notice when we picked up the ring after servicing. I did mention it felt less smooth or polished around the side or inside the ring. But in darker lighting it was noticeable the the outlines are not exactly circular.
My ring is also very thin 1.7mm so possibly because it’s already so thin it’s more noticeable?
Also with wear overtime do 18k rings get warped anyway? Just trying to weigh whether I should be okay with this or not.
Thanks, Amy

That doesn't sound normal. When a ring is resized if it is done correctly it should look exactly how it did before the size was changed. It also should feel uniformly smooth and polished, with no rough areas.

I had my ring resized from a 7 to a 6 and there is no way the average person, even a very observant one, could tell. Perhaps a jeweler might be able to see evidence under a loupe, but it definitely looks exactly the same to the untrained naked eye. I sent my ring back to the original jeweler (Midwinter.co) because I didn't want to risk it not looking the same, and I knew they would have the exact same metal alloys on hand and be able to remake my ring completely if they screwed anything up.

I would not at all be happy with a ring that looked different after resizing. You should definitely reach out to both Jared and James Allen to see if the situation can be fixed.

It sounds like they just did a poor job resizing it. I would take it to another jeweler!

Take it to another jeweler. It would bend if you're holding something really strong like if you're bench pressing, but this sounds like the jeweler just messed up.

Welcome to the community Amy! I’m so sorry that this has happened.

If you are unhappy with the way your ring is now, I would definitely bring it back to the jeweler and explain your issues with it. They should be able to smoothen it out as it sounds like it was poorly done the first time. If you are unsuccessful with this jeweler, you could bring it to another place to see what they can do.
