Reputable place for a hoop skirt?

Rosie, on December 13, 2021 at 7:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Long story short, when I bought my wedding dress I was wearing two hooped skirts/tulle petticoats to get the volume I wanted, and my alterations lady told me she could build up the tulle underneath to get that look, but I still don't think it's big enough - I want a full on ballgown shape.

I've called a few bridal stores and most only hire hoop petticoats out to brides who bought their dresses at that store, and are having their alterations done there (this is because it needs to coincide with the fitting where the dress is pinned for length). So, although I could get one it would cost the same as just buying one online, be hard to arrange, and require me to take it back the next day which would be a PITA.

While I wait for my alterations lady to tell me if she can source one for me or if I need to arrange one for myself, I've been browsing online and it seems like most sites are pretty dodgy-seeming so I'm wondering if anyone has any good sources?

For reference, I really do mean BIG - Elizabeth Taylor, full on princess large, haha:

The only place I have seen those is Etsy. But again, you have to figure out what to do with it after the wedding.

Yes, that's what the hire places were saying, but I don't really care about that, I'd much prefer to not have to return something and either sell it or offer it for free to someone on the local facebook wedding group I'm a part of.

I got mine from Amazon. Not the greatest quality but it held together throughout the day and the bridal photo session we had on our mini moon. I think a seam is coming loose but I bet I could even wear it again. It was for a fit and flare/mermaid gown so it was super poofy/big. It held my dress out nicely. It shipped fast and was less than $20 (I think, lol. Whatever it was it was cheap!) The hoop was adjustable

Oh damn, that is the kind of size I'm talking about! Is that just tulle? Or does it have hoops inside? I bet it looked amazing! I've been considering both but my dress is quite a heavy fabric so I'm thinking it might need the hoops for stability

That definitely gives more volume, and I know what you mean - I don't want to spend too much because it's not like I'm planning on wearing this daily for the next 10 years or anything, it just has to last one day, haha!

Thanks! It's so helpful to see how much bigger it makes it. To be honest I'm really surprised how difficult it has been to source a petticoat like this here.. it's not like no Australian women want a ballgown!

Have you considered an online reenactor shop? A lot of those dresses need hoops to be reasonably accurate, so a lot of those places have hoops for sale (and for some of them, I think you can specify hoop size).

Thanks B - that's super helpful! I did find some re-enactor shops on etsy and some of them had such beautiful things - although a little more than I was hoping to pay because they are obviously handmade and designed to be worn regularly.

I don't think (as far as I'm aware) that we have re-enacting as a hobby here in Australia! I do love old fashioned clothes so it's a bit of a shame.

    HOWEVER!

In good news I did find an Australian store that is selling one. I have no idea if it will be any better than one I could have found on amazon or something, but at least it doesn't have far to travel and might JUST arrive before my next fitting in January!

I figured you never know about reenacting (since people here in the US reenact all kinds of things lol - not gonna lie, I've been known to dress for Renaissance Festivals lol). Definitely don't want to spend a huge amount for a custom one, since you're unlikely to wear it again if reenacting isn't a thing in Australia.

Old fashioned clothes are where it's *at* - I've got a couple of "new look" style dresses, with crinolines, that I sometimes wear to work - and they're fantastic as wedding guest attire without the crinolines (and with a wide-brimmed hat for an outdoor event)

I'm so glad you found a store that has one and is reasonably close to you!

Oh I love those style of dresses! I have a boofy tulle petticoat I sometimes wear with that style of dress, but nothing big enough or stiff enough to support my mikado silk skirt.

Thank you, I'm very relieved I found one and so grateful for your suggestion!

Now I just have to worry that a. it won't arrive in time, it being so close to christmas or b. that it will be ludicrously large when it gets here

this is the one I bought, and it does look huge, but I did measure out the full diameter and stand in the middle of it and it didn't seem ridiculous... I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

my partner is extremely tall (just under 7 foot) so I really need some size to my dress to kind of... balance that out, visually, you know?

It's going to arrive in plenty of time and be perfect - I have every confidence.

Definitely need some balance, particularly if you aren't especially tall - because it's not like you can be on a stool for all your photos lol.

Lol we did consider one, and decorating it with ribbons so I could stand on it for the kiss, but thought that might horrify our older relatives!

Fingers crossed it gets here and I love it, but if not I'm sure I can work something else out - it really is just icing since I love the dress how it is, I just want a little more oomph and drama.
