Renting hair extensions???

Mel, on July 14, 2016 at 10:08 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

Ok so im a hair stylist and i had a client tonight tell me that i should just rent hair extensions for my wedding. I said thats not a thing i dont think.. Has anyone ever heard of this? And if this was a thing would you do it? Think about it, it kinda sounds like a good plan. Most of the time woman only want extensions for a special occasion and not for everyday use. So how perfect would it be of i could rent them for one night like my wedding for a way smaller fee then actually buying them and then give them back.. What do y'all think?

Ew I'd be too nervous that it wouldn't be properly cleaned. Don't trust that stuff. In theory it's a good idea. But God knows what other people do.

I haven't heard of this, and I've had hair extensions three times to cover patches of hair loss and thinning. The most recent time, I was at the salon, in tears. I lost all my hair last August, and I was trying to truck through the mullet phase, but I just couldn't. My hair stylist couldn't offer me any options other then buying, and I feel like she would have if she could have.

However, I have bought hair extensions from Ulta and worn them and been able to return them. They were clip ins. Definitely double check if you plan to go that route. I didn't style them or anything, so returning post-wear might change with the use of hairspray, ect.

If you hear about some kind of rental situation, I'd love to hear about it!

My FH's cousin is renting them for her wedding. I'm buying them. I'm sure they are sanitized or whatever but no thanks. lol

ETA: I'm not sure what she is paying for them but she did find a salon that rents.

No. Because renting means you've used it before. In someone else.

    Nope nope nope.

Yea but it would be 100% human hair. And if your going to wear extensions anyway you are wearing hair from another person's head, so i dont see why it would be gross if they were worn by someone else beforehand. They could be washed after each use. And kept in a sanitizer.

My first reaction was nope nope nope. But then after realizing that human hair extensions is already hair that has been on someone else's head, the gross factor seemed less. However, personally I would not do it. Although, I am not a find of hair extensions in general (for myself).

How would you be guaranteed that the hair have been cleaned/treated properly?

Renting them doesn't sound very hygienic, and they're not all that expensive to begin with.

    That seems unsanitary.

Kiandra: I don't think most people have enough knowledge about what to look for in extensions to make a confident purchase off of AliExpress. To be honest, I'm not even sure you can get actual human hair through them. Everything I have seen is synthetic, and depending on your hair type, even getting a good quality kanekalon fiber extension is going to be hard to match to natural hair, and they can't be dyed via normal means.

If you want natural hair extensions, you can get them relatively inexpensively at Sally Beauty Supply, where you can actually see the pieces and compare with your natural hair.

I would have zero problem ordering from AliExpress for cosplay/costuming purposes, but definitely not for wedding extensions.

Excuse me while I gag a little...

I am strange in that the thought of wearing someone else's hair on my body creeps me out, so the thought of wearing someone else's hair that someone else has worn is a double no for me.

There are news articles documenting the spreading of bed bugs from hair extensions, wigs, and weaves that were not properly sanitized. Mites can also be passed this way. No thank you. That would be a no go for me.

Is this even sanitary? Before I wear extensions, I wash them throughly and hang them to dry so I know they're clean despite being washed at the plant. I wouldn't be okay with sharing hair extensions, to me it's almost like sharing panties.

As someone who loves hair extensions, this idea sounds horrible to me. I have had the tape in ones for several months now, to give my hair fullness since it is baby fine. I can't imagine renting hair that someone else has had in their hair (lice, sweat, odor, etc...) Besides, most hair extensions that I have gotten are color matched to my hair color so that it matches perfectly. I can't imagine that renting them would give you that option, because it would ruin the hair if dyed too many times. That or it is a really cheap option to begin with...I would either invest in the tape in ones, which last about 2 months, or buy some cheap ones and have them color match them.

Another potential downfall to renting is not knowing how many times they have been used. If those extensions have been in multiple up dos, they have been back combed and curled multiple times, and they're probably going to look like it...

I'm renting a couple of dresses, I would not be interested in renting hair. there are way too many unknowns with renting hair.
