Renting a Car Internationally for the Honeymoon!

Lauren, on August 15, 2019 at 2:21 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 4

FH & I are planning our honeymoon to Providenciales, Turks & Caicos. Everyone online advises renting a car if you want to explore the island since things are spread out and taxi rides are very expensive. TCI is a British Territory so they drive on the left side of the road, but their cars are set up like American cars (steering wheel on the left side). Has anyone had experience driving internationally on the opposite side of the road? I went ahead and reserved a rental car since I can cancel for free, but I've never driven on the left side of the road so it'll take some getting used to!

The situation in these islands is a bit of a weird one with driving a standard car on the opposite side of the road— you as the driver are closest to the edge which is a bit jarring! (Though not so jarring if you think of it feeling like driving on a one way street! ...though passing people is a bit nerve racking!!) We travel to the Virgin Islands annually and it’s a bit of getting used to but the travel is slow (speed limit is low) and many tourists are driving , so everyone is extra cautious. The biggest thing is to REMEMBER to stay left! Haha. We have a habit of singing “to the left, to left” EVERY time we pull into the street so we’re conscious of it and don’t forget 🤣

What a wonderful adventure! You get used to driving on the left side. Do make sure your know if it is a manual or automatic. I found it easier to get used to driving on the left side when I wasn't also concentrating on shifting.

Hey Lauren! This sounds like so much fun! How long will you be on honeymoon for?

I don’t think that this is anything to worry about, more so to just be conscious of it! It’s great that there will be two of you in the car so that you can keep reminding each other.

It will take some getting used to but nothing that you won’t be able to handle!!
