Rent The Runway Bridesmaids Dress Rental

Chica, on April 29, 2017 at 8:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Hi WW Community,

I found some beautiful gowns on Rent the Runway for my bridesmaids. All my bridesmaids fell in love with the different styles, the designer, and the very affordable rental price. We basically had agreed to make rental reservations in July as that is the soonest date we can make reservations for our October event. I did my research online, went in store, asked around for people I know who have used the service...everything seemed GREAT. Well, my friend sends me a link (see below) were many customers have rated the service 1 star and have complained about their unreliability. For instance, receiving a damaged dress, receiving notification 3 days before an event that the dress is no longer available, unjust late fees, etc. So now, I am conflicted and don't know if they are as reliable as I once thought. My BMs are bummed bc obviously they were excited to wear a $700 for $100. Has anyone here used them how was it?

We went to our good friend's wedding in the fall and all the women did RTR and loved it! They send you two sizes so you don't have to worry as much about one not fitting. I heard no complaints

@Jeanette ooo great please let me know how it goes. I hope all goes well. It is such a great idea these days since with social media its unlikely my BMs will reuse this dress after being so heavily photographed. Lol.

@Anne Oh thats good news. Yes, I knew about the two sizes. We live in NYC so went into their physical store and the girls got fitted for the their dress size. I am more so confused with getting a defective dress or no dress at all 3 days before the wedding. Like there isn't much we can do at that point.

    @chica I will if I remember!! lol

My BM are getting Badgley Mischka gold/blush sequin floor length dresses and they are gorgeous. We tried them on in the Woodland Hills location and they all loved them.

@Jeanette hahah then I believe we have the same BM dresses. They are Badgley Mischka they have chosen 4 different styles but they are all sequin, blush gold, and flood length. Also, I will just lookout for your BAM and if you don't mention it as a hiccup I will assume all went well. Lmao.

My SIL used RTR for maternity pictures and did not have a good experience. Her pictures were scheduled for Sunday & on Thursday morning she got a text message that her dress was not going to be available. She was given a deadline of 2:00 to pick another dress or they'd just send one of their choice. She was at work during this time and didn't really have the time to sit at a computer and search for another dress. Somehow she managed to find something but it was too large and she had to wear the straps off her shoulders. Her experience alone made me have no desire to rent dresses for something as important as a bridesmaid dress.

@Katy ughhh see thats exactly the type of stress I wouldn't want to have days before the big day. Sorry this happened to her on such an important day. Your SIL's issue has apparently happened to many other customers if you check the link I posted. But, its contrary to the good reviews in their site. Now, I just feel so bad making my BMs paying $250+ for a gown they will never wear again. Since there is a similar Sorella Vita for $250 at my bridal shop. Idk if we can find anything else that is similar and lower than that price. My BMs are very picky with styles as they have different body types. Initially, they were all willing to pay the $250 except for 1 BM who reached out to me privately. So I'd figure if anything I would cover 1/2 of her dress. But when we found designer dresses for $100 we were sold on the idea. Idk if they will be as comfortable paying more knowing that the rental avenue is cheaper.

I know, it is such a shot in the dark really. You could have an awesome experience or you could be in a panic a few days before. I'll try and google what these dresses you have picked might look like. My bridesmaids also have very different body styles. Look into the #levkoff line. They're by Bill Levkoff but the line is only $150. I felt guilty asking my girls to buy a dress over $200 especially when I saw so many ugly bridesmaid dresses. I stumbled across the #levkoff line at my bridal shop and was pleasantly surprised.

We were thinking about doing this too!

Unfortunately the reviews turned me off. But I am doing rent the runway as a guest to several summer and fall weddings!

I offered this for my bridesmaids and only one of them decided to take the risk. On the other hand, they are all wearing different dresses in the same color scheme, so if that dress doesn't work or can't arrive, they can definitely send us a similar one and it won't be a big deal.

@Jeanna- Yep, I would totally use RTR as a guest. They carry amazing designer dresses for a fraction of the price. And I totally understand you being turned off by the bad reviews. I don't even know what to do bc on the other hand I have heard success stories on Youtube of brides who used them for their BMs dress. It seems like a gamble.

@Autumn oh thats a nice alternative. Where did the rest of your BMs find their dresses? As I mentioned before, my BMs are picky and they are set on this sequence blush gold gown. The problem is that this style is only available from certain usually high-end designers. Its going to be hard to find this dress for anything less than $250.

I've always had a great experience with RTR; I've rented at least 10 times for different occasions. Only once was the dress way too short!! (But I am 5'8). I was considering this for bridesmaids but going with Vow to be Chic instead. Their rental window is 2 weeks so if the sizes they order are off or if they get a damaged dress, there's still time to deliver a new one. Check them out.

Do you have a picture of the dress they're telling looking at? I have time, maybe I can help find a similar one somewhere for cheaper.

@Katy thank you so much I will look into the Bill Levkoff. I hope I find something close to it. I also think $150 is very reasonable price.

@chica, they are wearing different dresses in gold/blush tones so they all have something slightly different. The others shopped at DB, Macy's, Lulus, and Amazon.

@AwkwardToBe wow that is so very nice of you. Here are photos of my girls. I covered their faces for privacy. I have 6 BMs and 1 MOH. The middle dress will not be use, they didn't like it. The remaining 4 dresses will be used 3 will be worn by my 6 BMs (2 per style) and the other style will be worn by my MOH. The gowns should ideally be sequence Gold/Blush. This designer is named Badgley Mischka. But other designers carry similar styles to this. The best price we have gotten so far is $250 for a Sorella Vita, but and I feel guilty about it. I would love to find a similar style for under $200. Thank you in advance.
