Renewing vows - what should I wear?

Emily, on April 21, 2014 at 4:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

Hello Everyone - congratulations to all of you happily planning weddings, and lots of strength for those not happily planning at the moment!

I am Emily, on July 2, 2014 I will have been married for 25 years, we had a whirlwind relationship, 2 weeks after meeting we "married" each other in our local, park. Then a year later were married properly by a notary...in a dark apartment building with Christmas tinsel around a bower type thing, I was so nervous I laughed the entire way through... two kids and several goldfish later we want to renew our vows. We have chosen the rings, and I'm pretty sure I can get my teenage son out of his sweats for an afternoon! My 9 year old daughter is delighted to get a new dress, and my darling husband knows what he's wearing...but me? I have no idea! I am originally from Scotland and my husband is American, if that makes a difference Smiley smile

Congrats on your upcoming 25th wedding anniversary Smiley smile

I'm renewing my vows for our 10th anniversary in August and I found a beautiful dress that isn't too weddingy but formal. Depends on the type of event you're having. If it's a formal event, an evening gown would be a good way to go Smiley smile

Congratulations on being married 25 years!! That is wonderful Smiley smile

This question has come up before, and generally speaking, you should wear whatever you want!! A lot of ladies chose an evening gown or other formal gown, but probably nearly as many choose to wear a wedding gown. This is your chance to have the wedding you may have felt like you missed out on before, so you really should pick something that *you* like, and not worry about what other people like or what they may think of your choice.

If I were renewing my vows after 25 years of marriage, I would probably pick a low-key wedding gown. There are a lot of styles designed for "destination weddings" that are classy, sophisticated, still very bridal but not over the top.

Barbara is right. There are many opinions on this and what you should and should not wear. The dresses in those links are gorgeous. This is my dress. Designer if Jovani. No pics of me in it yet. I'm having it made Smiley smile

Im renewing my vows next year for my 5th anniversary. I will be wearing a pink wedding dress. Its a big one and doing it bec i didnt have a wedding when i got married. So doing it the way i would of if i did.

U can wear whatever u want to wear. So on that thought. Figure out how formal u want it to be and go from there. Even so though wear what u like. And congrats on 25 years!!

For our 20th anniv. vow renewal, I wore a taupe evening gown (couldn't fit into my wedding dress anymore).

I officiated a 40th anniv. vow renewal and the wife wore an elegant white evening gown for their beach ceremony.
