Renewing vows after 5 years

ERIN, on March 25, 2014 at 4:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

So I am new to this site, but I am in need of some helpful advice. My husband and I have been married for almost 4 years and we would like to plan vow renewal next summer in 2015 to mark our 5 years. When we got married we just went to the justice of the peace. We did not have the money to have a wedding. We also didnt get to have our kids with us. We both have children from a previous marriage and one child together. I got the bright idea to go online and get some general etiquette "rules" as to putting a ceremony together and I left most of them feeling totally stupid. Like I was a complete idiot for wanting to do a ceremony that included our kids and family this time. Help!!! Is it tacky to do a vow renewal at 5 years?

We are still torn on doing a JOP and a renew later on down the road for the same reasons. I say if you want to and you can afford it, go for it. Smiley smile

Under the circumstances, I think a vow renewal would be nice. I mean, don't go all Seal and Heidi Klum and have a massive vow renewal every single year (especially since it didn't exactly keep them married). I would just keep it modest and simple.

I'm picturing a renewal ceremony with the bride in a simple white dress and a flower in her hair, a groom in a nice suit, and the children standing around them in their Sunday best. Then a small afternoon reception with cake and champagne.

I would normally say a vowel renewal that soon is a little unnecessary. But I think in your case it is definitely appropriate. You didn't have a wedding the first time and (more importantly) your children didn't get to be a part of it. So, I'd say there is nothing wrong with it. Good luck planning!

I agree....we were thinking something very simple. Maybe even a small backyard country ceremony and then a little bbq and party afterwards.
